I don't have a list of pros and cons but I do have a couple of my birds microchipped and plan to have the rest done.

Ive had problems. My cockatiel got her leg band caught in a toy, broke her leg & twisted it backwards. The vet fixed her leg & took off the leg band, but wasnt sure if sure if she would ever use it again. I now microchip all birds I keep. Buy the way Spike is fine now, & having babies. She has an allergy to wood & had to go to my bird sitter to live there. She is now fully feathered. My vote is to microchip.

I would get one. Sadly though, my vet said that most likely no one would give him back if they found him. They would either keep him or sell him. He is a moluccan and is worth a good deal of money. More than anything in the house actually! But, it is definitely better to do it than to not. I don't think it would cause any problems. I don't bring my birds outside without a harness, and their wings are clipped and they are big birds, so I feel pretty safe without them. But after reading so many stories on here about lost birds I really think I will get it done next time I go to the vet.

I am going to be microchip all the fids. My vet has a practice that all birds that are brought into him for the first time are read to make sure that you are the owner. I did not know this till I saw the bill and it did say "checked for microchip". It would be nice if all vets did this.

I thought you could only have them in really large birds? Could I get my Hahns done?

I would read this (HowStuffWorks "Can a microchip cause cancer?") first. I can't find the original artical I read- but basically, there is a link between microchips and cancer. Now, not such a big deal in a dog that lives like 10 years- by the time the cancer develops, well- yeah. But for a bird that lives like 80.... that could be a problem. Plus the chips can migrate. For a dog or a cat I would definitely do it (and I do) but for a bird I wouldn't. Here's another site with some finding on the link between microchips and cancer (Verichip Cancer Report)

I'm thinking microchipping with my zon, grey and the hahns that we decide to keep. For me though it's more about the crap that's going on in Australia with class 1 exotic birds.
