Thumbs up Sammy

Sammy is eating oatmeal/apple/cranberries out of a spoon for me. Sammy has been watching me feed Dexter from a bent spoon. He started coming over to watch, & is now taking some as well. He is talking more, although I think this is to show off his talking skills.

It just goes to show how smart birds are. One of the best way to get your bird to eat different things is to eat in front of them. Sammy is a smart creative little guy who learned how to get what he wants.
It is funny, I have a Dexter CAG and a Sammy U2. Great names!

I started working with Sammy a year ago. There was little hope. He had been so abused that all I could offer was a place of solitude. I worked with my other birds in front of him, but when I got Dexter everything turned around. Dexter is a cag baby 3 months old now. I started adding oatmeal to thicken the formula to a chunky constitincy when Sammy came over to the side of the cage for a treat. Now I make extra for Sammy, who doesnt want to wait his turn.He will also dance for me, & call for me. And he is starting to talk up a storm. The only thing he says that I wish I hadnt said (when he through food out of the cage is) bad bird. Now every time he throughs food out the cage he says "bad bird". Sammy seems to enjoy doing & saying it. I hope it wont be another year before this bird lets me hold him.

Good luck on that! I am pretty experienced, not that your not, and my CAG, Dexter, will still not step up after 3 yrs. We agree to disagree! LOL! He is a rescue too. He only let's me scritch him on the head, neck, and beak. No stepping up. My husband can't even touch him. He is the easiest bird I have ever owned though. He stays out 24 hrs a day. I do put him away when I am not home, which is rare. My cockatoo is alot of work and constant monitoring. Boy, what a handful there!

Sammy let me touch his beak!!!!! I wanted to scream in delight, but held back for a good bird. Now Sammy is being bat bird to get attention & dancing when he receives it. And he wont miss a feeding of oatmeal/aplesauce/formula. Its getting very hard not to just grab the bird & pet him.
