I truly don't care if my Congos don't go to anyone else. They are wonderful with me and that is all I am concerned with. That may sound shelfish but...it is true!

I agree & I have had 2 TAGs. I am the favored person for my TAG, but he tolerates everyone else just fine. Neither have plucked or shown any neurotic behavior. All depends on the bird & environment though I am sure.

I'm a little confused as to how you can say that overall you find TAGs less nervous if you've never owned a CAG??!

Anyway! All my CAGs are sociable and they all accept any change immediately, that goes for new cages, toys, food, people, sounds and even houses!

Can't comment on TAGs coz I've never owned one!

I know plenty of nervous TAGS. I know CAGs that like to be used as bean bags by anyone that will hoist them to toss them about. Both have the same personality which is seriously determined by how they were raised from the get go. A badly reared TAG isn't going to be wonderful, just because it's a Timneh.

I prefer both for very different reasons. Choose which you like and pick an exceptional breeder who will keep you involved - be it long distance through pictures and videos or (this goes against my poor MAP oriented soul) in person through visits.

I'd be happy to sniff at any breeder you find!

I'm curious to hear more about why you like each?

To be blunt? I like the difference in colors.

That's it. Otherwise? Essentially the same bird, different size, different coloration.

I do prefer the silvery color of a CAG, and the red tail over the maroon of a TAG. As far as talking, they both have the same capabilities. I have known CAGs that don't utter word one and others that talk up a storm. I've witnessed TAGs spouting whole verses of the bible and songs. They are a little smaller and have a different color mandible, grey shading and tail color. These are the only differences, IMHO!

I have heard they have the same personalities overall, and are really just a product of their environment. My CAG is a rehome. He loved me right away, but hates men, he seems to get worse with hubby, but hubby is now afraid of him, since he lunges even if he is uncovering the cage. He tolerates my mom and my brother's gf, but he doesn't beg for their attention like he does for me. I have heard that TAGs will often be more comfortable on the floor than CAGS, and I know my Henry hates the floor. Personally I like CAGs because I think they are prettier. I dont think TAGs are ugly, I just prefer the CAG look. I'll admit the mandible of TAGs kinda weirds me out, as CAGs were always what African greys looked like to me, and once the local shops began having TAGs, they just looked sort of off lol. But I know that is just my wacky brain hating change :-)

TAG vs CAG

Hi there, We are leaning towards a TAG because of their smaller size (we live in a small house) but are not opposed to a CAG either. Finding breeders in the Central California area has not been easy.

Have you had any experience or do you know about the Bird Heaven Aviary in Selma Ca? I get a good feel from their web page and have been emailing back and forth with one of the breeders, but another opinion is always a good thing. We have a breeder here in town at a shop called For the Birds and More but her prices are high 1250 to 1500 for a female CAG and we are not all that wild about her energy.

Thanks in advance

Hi, I'm also contemplating getting an African Grey. I have really no preference between CAGs and TAGs, but I'm definitely hoping to get a younger bird, preferable under a year old. I'm also struggling to find breeders around Indy. The only one I've found that looks anywehere near knowledgable is asking $1200 per baby, and we aren't looking to spend quite so much. Anybody have suggestions??
