Same Species
Hi Guys!
I really need some help here. I have Cyd, my OWA who is a 1 year old male and I am considering rehoming a 2 year old female OWA. My question is, can they get along with one another if housed in separate cages and only allowed to play together when out of the cage? Will they bond to each other and forget about me? Am I asking for trouble if I do this? This is a great opportunity to give a home to a needy OWA and I know I love Cyd to pieces and would love to have a female OWA, but I am not sure. Please advise me! Thanks! Donna ![]() |

I emailed Joanie Doss and here is her advice:
As much as I think you would give this bird a good home, I would recommend against it. There is a good chance it will affect your relationship with Cyd. It takes a lot of room and planning to keep male and female Amazons near each other as pets. Those boys just get too romantic when they see a pretty girl! There is always the chance this will not happen, but the odds are against you. If you plan to breed, then there would be no problem. If you decide to get her, you would have to put them in different rooms. If they can see each other, they will want to be together and if they are together they will want to go to nest when they get older. Maybe you could talk a friend into taking her and help them give her the home she deserves. Joanie Doss The Amazing Amazons http://www.parrothouse.com/bodylanguage.html

Outlaw and Joanie,
I was afraid of that! So if I ever plan on getting another bird, I should get one of another species, correct? Say like and African Grey or another species of Amazon altogether? And preferably a male? If I were to get her and they fell in love, could they be housed together? If they are housed together will they not like me anymore? I have a feeling they would shut me out, huh? Thanks for all the good advice! Donna ![]() |

I think with an Orange Wing you could get another Orange Wing male. Even if you get a African Grey and it is a female, your male could get romantic notions. Never cage a male and female together unless you plan to have baby birds. There is a documented case of a Rosebreasted Cockatoo and cockatiel mating and producing young. Most often birds that are housed together will bond to each other rather than with their human family.
