Lilac Crowned Amazon? Balance problems??

Hi Everyone,

I would like to ask you about Gilligan. He is our newly adopted Lilac Crowned Amazon and we call him a gentle giant because he is so sweet and gentle. We adopted him from a very nice lady that bought him the best biggest cage and so forth. She just didnt have time to spend with him, he is 8 months old now. We have noticed he does not balance very well, is this due to his age and not very much handling or might he have someother problem? We are hoping it is the age and handling issue.

Let me know what your opinion is. Thanks

Our Skippy is at least a few years old, and she was a bit clumbsy at first. With her, I think a lot was the feather hack [I mean the bad flight feather trim job] that she had. I don't think she was ever let to fledge. I don't think birds should get there feathers trimmed until they have learned to fly. And then only if you think it neccessary to do so. Some breeders and stores never let them learn to fly and learn the natural ballance they need. Our Skippy will still loose her footing every now and then [it's usually when she has a nut in her beak and she's trying to climb out to her t-perch], but otherwise has grown out of a lot of the clumbsy stage.
We are only guessing that she is now about 3 as we re-homed her as a rescue, and did not know her history. We took into account of has her feathers were not totally filled in on her face and her feet, eyes and beak seemed to be that of a yearling. Our vet agreed that when we got her [about two years ago], that she was only around a year. I was told she was a MRH male, but the moment I saw her, I knew she was a Lilac crown. Had the DNA blood test when we had her vet checked to find out that 'he' is in fact a she.
These Lilacs are sooo sweet and gentle compared to our Yellow Crown. Don't get me wrong, our YCA, Oscar, is a very good bird and sweet with my wife, but Skippy is sweet to everyone.
