Need Help With My Amazon And Baytril

Sorry, I am new and think I first posted this in the wrong section, so also am posting it here.
Need Some Help About My Amazon

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi All,
I am new and I had posted this also on the UpToSix Chat forum, so if anyone visits that one and has already read it, I apologize, but I really need some input as I am uneasy.

My Amazon parrot, Chilli, was diagnosed today with a yeast infection and slight bacterial infection. My vet, who is an excellent avian certified vet so don't get me wrong, I trust her, prescribed Baytril and also Diflucan. Chilli has taken Difulcan before but not Baytril.

I have read so many bad and dangerous things about Baytril online. While I know the internet is full of bogus BS, when you see the same thing so much (dangers of Baytril in birds) it does make you uneasy.

Does anyone know why there is so much online about Baytril? I need to start her on it tomorrow and I am a bit worried.

Chili apparently got the yeast infection as I had given her a slight bit more apple slices then I normally do and did not get home in time to get them out in a few hours, so the vet feels the sugar in it gave way to the yeast overgrowth, etc, especially if they fermented a bit.

My main concern now is the Baytril and that Chill be ok. She is acting pretty good (even before I took her in to vet today) but I took her anyway to be safe. I will give her the Diflucan but am worried about the Baytril.

Can anyone shed light on why it gets such bad press and have you guys used it without any problems.

Thanks so much for any input to anyone.

There is nothing whatsoever wrong with using baytril with parrots.

I have used it on hundreds of birds and the only problem is injection site reaction which can kill tissue if given full strength(i use an equal amount of ringers to dilute the dosage and have no problems with injection site reactions or necrotic tissue)

your vet is right on the money.

Thanks so much for the info. If you have used it that much, then I feel much better about it. I was concerned as Chilli got a reaction to a docyclline shot once (after surgery) and was in an incubator for a week and almost died, but we were not quite sure if that was it or not. Vet thought it might have been, but so much was also going on. The surgery was quick and just to remove a benign eye lesion, so vet did not feel surgery would have caused the adverse reaction.
That is why I like to check out certain meds first and especially those I have heard negatives about.
Thank you, you have been quite helpful and I appreciate it.

I agree with John 100%..not only is he one of the people with alot of medical knowledge here on BB that we have, and the hundreds of birds that he has helped through they years, but also knowing I have used it over the years as well without problems. Baytril is a broad spectrum antibiotic and if used more often then not in avian patients.

enrofloxacin, broad-spectrum antibiotic, useful for a wide variety of infections, injectable (can be given orally), tablets, also available in a 3.23% solution for that can be administered orally, multiple injections should not be given, as they can cause serious tissue damage, pain and nerve damage

One additional question to either you or John...

Since Chilli's main problem is the yeast infection, wouldn't giving an antibiotic (any antibiotic) at the same time as she has the yeast infection make it worse, even with the Diflucan being given also? I asked the vet and she said since the antibiotic (Baytril) was only for one week and Diflucan was for two weeks, it would not make it worse. She did not mention giving yogurt but someone on another board mentioned I should.
Any input on that? Thanks.

No, there is not a problem using an antifungal (flucaonazole, trade name is Diflucan) and an antibiotic (enrofloxacin, trade name Baytril) at the same time. The only reason it would be problematic would be if they interacted in some adverse way, and these two should be fine. (In another life, I did teach pharmacology to vet students, though we did not talk much about birds). Hope your baby is feeling better soon. Don't forget to finish the whole course of antibiotics.

Some of my flock has been on Baytril from time to time for bacterial infections and have always tolerated it well.

I've never read anything bad about Baytril before. My amazon was on it for quite a bit of time trying to knock out a nasty infection that he acquired in his previous home. The only thing you will want to do is start adding organic apple cider vinegar, and yogurt to his daily regimine. Because Baytril is so effective at knocking out the bacterias in the system, it can knock out the bad bacterias as well as the normal positive bacteria in the system. You want to rebuild the positive flora to prevent getting another infection. My vet told me that apple cider vinegar is highly effective, even more so then yogurt, at helping regain the natural flora.

give your bird some danactive(that stuff works great) AFTER you finish the antibiotic treatment.

everyone should give it to their birds at least once a week to help with digestion.
