Exclamation Help! Rescued Orange Wing Amazon

I rescued an Orange Wing today who was found by a woman 18 years ago. He has been in a parakeet size cage (rusted at that), no toys, 1 perch, etc. It was pitiful. I have an AFrican Grey and I know much more about them. Arnold (the Amazon) is in a new, large cage with a clean food bowl and clean water. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Anything to help me to help him acclimate. I know he is at least 18 years old and by his "c" shaped band is an import. He seems to be in relatively good health considering his previous living conditions. We did clip his wings even though his muscles are probably too weak to fly and trimmed his nails. They were very long. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Orange Wings are delightful birds. They generally do not show the aggression
often seen in the "Hot Three" Amazons......Napes, Double Yellows, and Blue Fronts. Since this bird was kept in a small cage, he probably didn't get to
see a lot of the world around him. That means you will have to slowly re-introduce him to new objects and places. The main thing with this bird is to go slowly when bringing new objects near him. Start by putting new things far away from him and gradually (over days if need be) move them closer to him.

If he allows you to carry him on your arm or a stick, take him for short walks
around the room. When he is calm about this, take him to different rooms in
the house. This will help him adjust to many of the every day objects that other birds have come to accept. If he looks upset or stressed, stop and go
back to the place where he is relaxed again. Each day try taking him a little
further.

It is good that the bird does not have any major health problems. That means you just have to work on his socialization. Be patient and move slowly.
