Mites

Are mites a problem with Amazons? I was noodling around the pet store the other day, looking for a way to spend some more money.

I saw a cage hanger thing that was marketed to stop Lice/Mites, and remember seeing them on smaller bird cages.

Anyone have experience with this sort of thing?

No mites are not a problem at all. Actually from what Ive heard those mite stop disc are bad for your birds. I don't remember where I read it but either way I have never used one and don't have a mite problem..

for those who are breeding birds and are worried about mites in the nests.
the British bird groups that i belong to recommend sprinkling Talc powder inside the nest before the birds start nesting (under the pads). they "swear" by this.

so if you need a cheap way of keeping mites at bay in the nest/ boxes you might want to try this.

Mites

No, mites are not a problem, but those mite protectors are. They are toxic to most parrots and should be banned from the stores....Deb

Thumbs down

Bad news are those cage protectors. Just attaching poison to your cage as would be flea and tick collars on a dog or cat.

Poison!

There is a great article in the newest Bird Talk magazine about mites and other insects.
