New 4 month DYH Amazon

We just got this beautiful DYH Amazon yesterday. We don't know the sex yet since the DNA test has not come back but will go with a she for now.

We picked her up from the airport and brought her home. We had a lot of trouble getting her out of the carrier. She would not step up or want to come out of the carrier. We finally got her out and had a little trouble getting her into her cage so she can settle in.

Today she has approached me has eaten some nuts from my hand and she has been very quiet. We know its going to take a few days for her to get used to her new home and new family and would like some advice on how to get her to step up later on so on.

Thanks

Welcome to our forum. She will take some time to adjust but in no time she will be your best friend.. I have never had the pleasure of having a zon so can't help to much. Just take things slow and let her decide you are not going to hurt her. If she is 4 months old it won't take long at all. Post some pics as soon as you can. Chris

Thanks for the advice, right now she has learned that me opening the cage and standing there means she'll get a treat so she will run to the door and extend her beak to get her treat. Now I have to work on her to step up from there. She learned that on the second day with me so I am sure it will not be long before she comes out. I will post some pics of her soon.

Just an update on the situation.

After a little more than a week and training with positive reinforcement, the bird steps up with out problems and is starting to let us scratch her head. She rarely bites and is very active. This was all done with clicker training and positive reinforcement. This has been a complete change from the terrified bird she was when she arrived.

Thank you for the update. I love the double yellow headed amazons. Soon she will be acting like she owns the place and you will be wondering what happened to the shy bird that first came to your house. That's always a good sign.
