I need your help and advice please. I own a four year old lilac crown amazon. He's normally a sweet tempered and loving pet. However, something new is distressing him and I don't know exactly how to handle it. Recently I aquired a Nintendo Wii video game console which is hooked up to my bedroom TV - in the same room as Rico's cage is. He is usually out of the cage on his large playgym when I'm home, with plenty to occupy himself with. So anyway....my problem is this:
When I use the game system, he goes ballistic. As soon as he sees that wireless controller being used, he transforms from a sweet docile parrot, to this maniac of a bird - who flies over to me in a rage and attacks me and bites real hard! If I put him in the cage while playing, he paces the cage, pinpointing his eyes, tail fanned. He's acting very aggressive, and agitated when that Wii remote controller is being used. After I stop, he's his lovable self again. What is going on here??? Has anyone else experienced this while using a wireless remote from a game system around their birds? I wonder if the remote could be emitting a low frequecy noise which bothers him???? Or is there another reason? I don't want to stress my bird, but I don't want to simply discard my console and many games either. If I invest in another TV for downstairs (a room which the bird is NOT in) I'd need to be sure he can't be bothered by any frequency coming through the walls. Yet I don't even know if that's the problem to begin with. Can anyone shed some light on this situation? I'm sooooo frustrated. ![]() |

I'm not sure about any low frequency noise. I'll leave that up to the experts on this forum.
However, I do know that some birds do not like new tech equipment; eg cameras. I'm not sure except to say that perhaps it is just foreign to them? I'm just stabbing in the dark here. |

i dont think the wii emits anything bothersome to the birds. we have a wii and none of ours react to it
however, he probably thinks the controller is harmful and is warning you about it...though it seems mean it is really the only way he knows how to warn you of danger i would highly suggest moving the wii out of your bedroom so it doesnt stress him out |

Could he view this controller as a threat to you? Maybe you could try desensitizing him by rewarding any calm behavior in the presence of the controller. Start by having it on the table or whatever (not in your hand) rewarding with treats or praise when he is comfortable and non reactive. Then move it closer to him (or closer to you - which ever seems to be the provoking factor). Again, reward and praise when he is calm. Work by little steps until you are able to hold the controller in his presence with no reaction. Then you'll have to continue on in steps until you can move it around in your hand. I might also not have the game actually on at first as the visual/noise factor might add another element.
