some great ancidotes. and some great advice in this thread.

some of the advice i have seen though on other threads an blogs. oh my god how bad.

i have had two birds now for 5 months. both are in their two's. fred the amazon was hand raised rehome and lola the lovebird NOT was parent raised rehome. i do believe that both were rehomed because of the biting.

i am a retired engineer so i tend to believe books written by experts... although even experts can be wrong. if i see the same info written over n over gain i tend to believe that it is probably good advice. i am reading the idiots guide to birds and birds for dummies currently.

an amazon and a male in particular goes through hormonal changes between 7-12. a good avian vet can counteract these changes with supplements.

i recently saw a show on animal planet about a large bird (cockatoo) that was a one owner bird and lunged and bit other family members. they had an expert bird handler come in and within 3 days that bird was accepting of all the family members. imo all it takes is the right technique and patience.

story.... fred was on his out of the cage perch and i was in another room (which i probably shouldnt have done as he was out of my site). after an hour or so i happened to glance at the hall way an here comes fred looking for me. i was stunned that he would do this after all i had only had him a month and he is still nipping at me. well right behind him was my great dane and behind her was my calico cat. what a site to see. bird dog cat. when i read the post about the locomotive i thought of this. it sure was funny to see but from now on i put my birds up when they are not within my site.

My amzon Chester did not like my girl friend when I first brough him home. Since we were already living together this was a bit of an issue. He wasn't as bad as some as he was still only 8 months old. My girl friend taught Chester how to give a high five. That was the tipping point. Since Chester learned that he could touch her and get praised for it he has become a lot nicer to her. She still has a hard time taking him out of his cage by her self but otherwise they have a good relationship. Our other amazon Mikey so far has no particular preferences. We have had him since March. This could be because Mikey was in a pet store until he was 2.5 yr old and harassed and held by so many people while he was there.

Tiki generally prefers my son to me but loves us both. I noticed however his mood tends to go with whomever lets him eat out of their dish that day.

We have 3 amazons here. Sunshine (20 YNA), who seriously hates all women. Galahad (10 BFA), hates hubby! Loretta (6 OWA) likes all. In 7 years I have never gotten Sunshine to even remotely like me, she will take food from me, but other than that she would prefer to make me bleed! Galahad has also never really given hubby a chance either in almost 8 years.

Sometimes, it is just something you live with and work around. Zons are stubborn LOL! The article, while good, would be more of a "myth buster" if based on more amazons. Galahad will often allow a stranger to pick him up and will even give a kiss, but at home, no way!

Every bird is different, some never seem to show the aggressive tendancies and others turn into total brats.

Thank you for this. My wife and I laughed until our stomachs hurt.

Poor Guy but way too funny.

As he ran around the sofa she cut across. She had an evil but ecstatic look in her eye! When Guy turned the corner Montey hit the wall ( she never really learned how to fly) and fell to the floor and ran after him like a locomotive. I was horrified but couldn't help laughing. It was the most comical thing I've ever seen. Guy looked honestly scared and he had good reason to be, she would have shredded him!
