I really like the independent nature of amazons compared with the "cuddly" 'toos.
I find the intensity of some 'toos can just be a little too claustrophobic for me. I enjoy a bird that will come over for a scratch and kisses then go off and do it's own thing for awhile.

Amazons are one of the species of birds that can be really independent and will take affection when and if they want it. My mealy will sometimes let me cuddle him, but it is all up to him. He will lean into my chest when I am holding him, and I know that he is telling me it is okay to wrap my arm around him. He will also tend to be a bit more clingy if he is scared or in an unsure environment (vet's office lol). My MRH isn't cuddly at all, about the most I get out of him is scratching his head- and even then he tells me when to do that by bowing his head down on his playstand/ perch.

My BF was an extreamly cuddly baby but not now (only seven months old now so you cannot go by the baby way. Panamas are said to be more mellow all around.

The biggest chatterbox in my house is Willow (BF) seven months old. She doesnt say allot of audible words just yet but her infliction is incredibly human and she goes on and on for what seems like forever. She sounds like a cartoon playing on the tv. But she does already say Hi (three different ways). Hello in a british accent (from where i dunno), What!, wadda yu doin, and wonderful human laughter that is infectious! Oh and "Hi Widow" (her version of her name, although I'm not sure I like her saying Hi widow to me every day, lol. She started with the whats and Hi at about five months old.

That used to worry me too but so far I haven't had any problems with that. I leave a tv on all day for them for noise. I usually leave it on cartoons but none of my birds have picked up anything from the tv or the telephone.
My mom has a moluccan that we took in who is in her mid 20s. She used to have somte colorful language that she was taught in her old home. She lost interest in it when she lived with me (before I found out that I was horribly allergic to cockatoos). She doesn't use it anymore. My nanday used to say F you but I changed it into Thank you whenever she said it and that seemed to cure her of it. Not that it always works that way but unless you curse a lot, I doubt you have too much to worry about. My eclectus and amazon are both wonderful talkers. They like to say things that I say and repeat words that get them attention. I ignore anything I don't like and it's soon forgotten. If I were to get another zon, I would get a female panama. |
