Green-cheeked (Mexican Red-Headed) 'Zon

I've had my 'new', 10-year old Green-cheek Amazon for 2 1/2 weeks now, and she's a real pumpkin! However, there appears to be hardly any info. on this species, and a lot of what I've found is contradictory.

I have no long-term history on her. I bought her from a breeder who took her in on trade - and had her for 6 months. She wants to be a pet, so he let her go to a pet home (that would be us! ). She's surgically sexed and has a sexing band, but no other band.

Ever is a real cuddle bird, happiest when sitting on my shoulder (and I know you shouldn't let the bigger birds up your shoulder, and I know I don't know her well enough to really allow it, but that's were she's most content - and I'm being careful, and yes, it's my fault if I get bitten in the face...)...

She also does the best wolf-whistle I've ever heard and has said 'Hello' a few times. She also does some garbled talking that we can't make out. She solicits scritches and if she gets mad, will grab your finger in her beak and PUSH it away...I was amazed...

If anyone has any info. about this species, or first-hand experience, I'd love to hear about it...

A friend of mine (Kelly from here) recently rehomed one of these lovelies with me and I absolutely adore her. Matter of fact, she came to me with the name Adora -- so appropriate. I can't give you much scientific info, but I can tell you that of all the 'zons I have she is one of the sweetest and most predictable. I don't advise people to let 'zons on their shoulder, but I let her there with no hesitation. Congratulations and many happy years with your little one.

She is just gorgeous. I let my girl 'Zons on my shoulders too - an Orange wing and a red lored. I don't let the boys up there, but I haven't had them since they were youngsters either.

...I'm also glad to hear others let their birds up on their shoulders! Heehee...I just have to make sure I take off all my jewellery first...she really likes trying to bite through necklaces, reconfigure earrings and has done a number on my brand-new, hard-to-find leather watch strap...

...I've managed to leave my wedding band on, she's trying to bite it off too, but I say 'uh-uh!' and she quits... (well, at least for a while...)...

...one would think she'd prefer the rawhides, popsicle sticks and other bird-chewies I've bought her, but nooooooo....

Just a couple of pics of Ever...she's a funny girl...

...I haven't seen her eat a veggie yet, although I keep offering...but she had a blast destroying the carrot...and in this instance, she actually ate a bit of it...

...I tried to get the cutest pic of the cat and the bird napping together on the coffee table, but the flash woke them up and made them grumpy...the cat is NOT looking at the bird with hungry eyes... (N.B. Everyone is carefully supervised when everyone is 'loose')...

...and a last one of Ever playing crib, unfortuately she cheats and marks the cards...

Well I am just jealous, jealous, jealous!! The Mexican redhead is my second favorite, definitely one of my dream birds. I married a redhead, so I may be partial, but I just think they are gorgeous! I think the red loreds are beautiful too. But, the orange wings take the cake for me, I have to remain loyal to my boy.

I love the names Ever and Adora, very pretty names. Amy, I think I told you before, but I think you have the most unique set of names for your birds. I just love them!

...heh...thanks guys...I still can't believe she was in need of a good home! She really doesn't do anything that I would consider 'wrong'! At any rate, I am not complaining...I'm so glad she came to us!
