Well, thank you, Amy.

One more coerced into entering the dark side.

That makes...one.

I do not know any Zon owner's who have not been bitten by their babies. Especially during breeding season..... those hormones sure kick in.....

I have 8 zons (all well beyond breeding age)and have only been really bitten by one and thats just because he is a rabid nutcase that takes pleasure in eating human flesh.(He is a found bird and crazy as hell, after the first month I named him Cujo because of his appitite for human flesh)Any humans flesh LOL

I love my sweet baby mealy, but yep, the other day I felt the wrath of an amazon bite. He got just a little too excited, he unfortunately has picked up a bad habit of running after my kids, I said come here, he came her and latched onto my finger with alot of pressure, didnt break the skin, but a nice swell. Honestly, I think it hurt my feelings more then my finger :) He didnt latch on long, and he knew right away he did wrong and stepped right up and back into his cage when I came back for him.

I tried my hardest not to react, but I think instinct kicked in and I said ouch pretty loud, so much for not showing him it bothered me :(

Yeah, I am having a few issues, but he is a baby and I am still working with him, he's just a wild boy who loves to play :)

Biting generally comes from an Amazon that is (1) scared, (2) overly excited or (3) hormonal. Most biting comes from the mature males of Double Yellows, Yellow Nape and Blue Fronts. The females may bite but it is generally the mature males of these three species. These boys are programed in the wild to guard the home and family. When nesting, they have a hair trigger to drive away any potential threat to the territory or his family. This instinct is still very strong in individual birds.

There are always exceptions to the rule. Also, the really bad bites....ones that break bones, require stitches or leave huge welts are almost always done by a hormonal male of the three species listed above.

I have had a hormonal bite from a Nape that left a bruise the complete length of my arm from wrist to elbow and covered the complete underside of my arm and half of the upper side. Thank heavens he didn't break the skin. He just gave me a big pinch!

Lilac Crowns, Orange Wings, Green Cheeks and Mealies bite of course.....all birds can bite under the right conditions.....but are not as apt to as some of the other species.
