Ok, now that I have put in my introduction, I feel better posting.

Well, I can honestly say that my 6 month old little boy mealy is more like a obnoxious 2 year old boy with a beak...lol no matter how many toys I have out for him, he is looking for something of mine to get. He loves to play and nibble on my arm(trying to break him of that) likes to growl if he doesnt agree with something....dont get me wrong, I absolutely love him, just not the "gentle giant" I kept hearing about. OK, he does let us put him on his back already and he loves to get rubbed and sweet talked to. He would way rather be out with us then in his cage. He is loads of fun, just kind of has that rebellious teenager attitude going.

He rarely screams, likes to make load HUH? kind of noise when he sees something that he is really interested in, especially outside....almost like he is asking me "what is that?" Also likes to sing, as you can see in my intro post link to our website. OK, im done babbling :)

(Looks like I am resurrecting an old thread...)

little_brodie...anything new going on with your Mealy? I adopted one about 3 months ago, and she is the gentle giant! She's somewhere between 25 and 30 years old as best as we can tell.

I have two older zons and none of mine scream or are even very loud. Hook does this baby cry that can be loud but other than that they are not extremely loud. Especially not as loud as a conure or a macaw or a cockatoo. I have never met an amazon I didnt like, and as far as I am concerned they are the Hyacinth of the bird world. Im just a little partial!!
LOLOL

Looks like he's supervising his secretary to me! Great pics in the MySpace.

I need to find different toys and a less destructible swing for my Mealy Isabella. What works with my DYH and male Eclectus, Izzie destroys. I put a big thick cotton rope swing in her cage, just like the ones my other birds have had, and she loved it so much she destroyed it within a few days!

Izzie having fun with her ex-swing which no longer exists.

My other two birds have had those same type swings for years. I wash and re-cycle them normally. Never had one chewed completely through before! Same thing with a large Manu mineral block I put in her cage. Took her just a couple of hours to turn it to a pile of dust! So much for that! Thought a Mealy might benefit from having minerals to chew on. The other birds will barely touch a mineral block. Once Izzie gets started on something, she does not stop til it's destroyed. But if it's too hard to chew on, she figures that out too, and moves on to something more easily destroyed. Been buying 2" X 2" X 8' long pine furring strips at Home Depot (cheap!) cutting into small pieces and hanging in her cage. She goes for that white pine!

What impresses me about her so much is how gentle she is! She will cause quite a loud ruckus sometimes when I want her to get on my hand, but so far never a bite.

I notice some Mealys have a yellow patch on their head. Mine has zero yellow anywhere. I guess a sub-species of Mealy?

Thanks for the info! I read "Weighing in between 2-4 pounds" (Wow!) and wonder about that. When I got Isabella 3 months ago she was way overweight at 782 grams, which still isn't 2 lbs. She has her full wings, but couldn't fly at all. She's been on diet since she came here, and gets to come out and climb around most of the day and gets to flap her wings, and is down to 700 grams. She can fly across the room now without crashing!

I am curious about the weight of other Mealys. Hopefully some Mealy caretakers will chime in and post the actual weight of their birds to get an average.
