Hi Dave!
I think your Ringo is not a Lilac Crowned Amazon. They have yellow-ish horn colored beaks, and their red is red-brown. I think your guy looks like a Salvin's Amazon - which is a sub species of the red lored. The Salvin's have the horn and grey beaks.

What do you think?

Here's the Salvin's:

Aspen looks like a Salvin's, but I think she is a regular red lored, or perhaps a cross between the subspecies, as she does have tiny yellow feathers on her cheeks. She was sold to me as a Red Lored, but it was all very sketchy, so who can say for sure? Whatever she is, she's comical and keeps me laughing! And she can be a real sweetie, too. I love when she hangs upside down.

I think you are right! How long before you realized this about Aspen? I guess I just took the bird rescues word for it on the Lilac. I did see some pics before and I didn't really look close enough, or didn't realize there were so many subtle differences in Amazons. I've been mostly familiar with just a handful of the most popular species growing up.
Thanks for shedding some light.

I think its cool how much Aspen and Ringo's behavior is similar. I have no idea how this bird may have been trained or treated previously. I think he was treated well. Possibly hand raised, in my uneducated opinion. He has no leg band. I don't know if that means anything. I think he was born and raised in Florida or at least most recently in Portland.

Is Aspen very playful? Does she like toys?

I am so glad that someone said something about your bird looking like a Red Lored Amazon. I am absolutely no expert but Dave's bird looks suspiciously like my "D". DNA sexed female Red Lored.

Here's another shot of "D".

Well, he has no yellow under the eye, like your Red-Lored.

Yes, the yellow is on the nominate species, but not the Salvin's sub-species. I do think Ringo is a Salvin's. If he was a Lilac Crowned Amazon, he would not have the grey on his beak - plus if you look in the other recent thread someone posted pics of their pair of Lilac's and you can see that they aren't the same in coloring in the reds, especially.

Aspen is a comical gal. Not of my birds are real big toy destroyers but they all enjoy the pinata toys, and toys that are shreddable! Willow and Aspen most recently found a carboard box and some books to destroy . . . opps!!

Thats another funny coincidence. Apparently, Ringo's favorite toy is a pinyata. I don't know what these look like and haven't gotten him one yet. He doesn't pay much attention to the toys in his cage now. So I'll probably be switching them out soon.

If you see that thread with the lilacs, let me know which one it is.

thanks,

Dave

Here's a pic of Mindy's "Ramone". His beak coloring looks much like Ringo's.
