Linda, I am not sure if you have tried this but when I first got Sam he was reluctant to step up and would nip me. I started taking him on outings to the bird store. When at the bird store I was the only familiar face so I never got bit. He then came to trust me and doesn't try to bite as much. He still lunges at anyone who walks past his cage even me. He is alot better away from his cage. If you don't want to handle him take him on outings in a pet carrier. I have useda hand held perch to get Sam out of his cage to avoid being bitten.
