I have noticed that my Amazon has a different smell according to his mood. If he's pleased, such as when I'm feeding him his favorite treats or scratching under his chin, his smell is kindof sweet. However, when he's overly alarmed or angry, that smell can take on a bitter odor. We've learned to pay attention as much to his odor as we do his body language to properly handle him.

Perhaps yours was affected by the change in diet from changing owners, or he may have been somewhat alarmed with the new settings. You said it's not so bad now, so that can mean he's settling in to his new surroundings. :)

LOL! This thread cracks me up! My Zons both have the musky smell...though I dont notice it on Pocco my DYH often. My red-lored Aries, often emits his smell stronger when excited. And its true about the whits capped pionus...they are WAY stronger smelling than zons!! But Luckily all of my boys have the pleasant musk not the foul musk! LOL

Do you notice the smell is mainly from the cere?

This is what my zon does.

That is because they spread the oils from the gland to their feathers with their head, all of them do it and thats why the smell is strongest on the head.

I had to laugh at the subject to this message - I'm with some of the other zon owners - I love the smell. I know they're happy when they have this odor. Isabel, my YNA, has that smell and yes, it is around the cere and yes, it's strongest when she gets excited (which for a zon can happen anytime-LOL). I have noticed that the green cheek (or Mexican redheads) tend to smell a little stronger than some of the other zon species but I don't know why. Are the feathers in good condition? How's the health? Diet could indeed have a large impact but it could also be that the bird is still adjusting to new surroundings and it will settle with time.

I'm new to the Amazon game, but I also just LOVE that sweet, musky smell. I only smell it when I get my face right in there, but it just smells great to me.

(Then again, I like how my dog's feet smell, so maybe I'm weird. LOL)

As I already said, I love the smell of my Zons, LOL! What even more funny to me is that I have never meet another person that liked the smell of dogs feet! I LOVE it! Smells like fritis...or tortilla chips!!! LMAO!

How did you find out that you like the your dogs feet smell.

did you just grab him and start snorting them or did you have to get really drunk and hide in the closet with his feet in a paper bag?

See? thats what eating paint chips will do to your brain

ROTFLMAO
