Question How Loud???

EXACTLY how loud are Amazons?
What kind of sounds do they make?
Do they scream?
I have a U2 now and don't think I could handle another bird like her. (loudness)
singing, etc doesn't bother me.
I have other birds and kids as well.
Can anybody suggest a breed of Amazon that makes a good pet? Not overly noisy but good with kids?
I had heard somewhere lilac crowned are the best for that.
Thanks - Natalie

My Orange winged Amazon is extremely loud. The only difference between him and a U2 is that the U2 has a deeper voice and my zon's is very high pitched. Mine can rival a U2 on loudness. And oh yes, they scream. His screams are ear piercingly shrill. He also barks, honks, and trills, all of which can be very loud when he wants them to be. They aren't quiet birds, although there's always the exception to the rule.

Not sure about the lilac crowned, but orange wings are supposed to be good natured, as is the yellow shouldered, green cheeked (mexican redhead) and I'm sure there are a few others. There are other members here who have amazons, they can give you more input on the different types and their personalities.

"D", my Red Lored can peel paint when she gets stirred up! But thankfully, she doesn't do it ALL the time. Now, Kiwi, Hubby's DYH amazon, is VERY quiet. Never makes a sound, unless Hubby leaves the room, then he moans pitifully until Hubby returns. These are the only amazons that I have personal knowledge of, so can't make any suggestions.

My Orange wng is sooooo quiet. Actually none of the AMazons are very loud, to me, with the exception of when Maple does his loud, repetative call, nad even that is not to loud, really. I loaded some sound clips of them in one of the other threads. I think you can get to them here: http://www.vimeo.com/user=AmiablePigs
My Amazons are actually very quiet most of the time, unless the want food, or I am talking on the phone. ;~)

I have a Yellow Naped Amazon and he is quiet. He never makes any bird noises only talking and some mimicing. He is great with everyone that he likes, if he doesn't like you he will let you know.

How loud are Amazons? That all depends on several factors. First of all, a 'zon kept singly will in all likelihood be quieter than one kept in a flock (particularly a flock of other 'zons). Second, when there's not much activity there won't be as much likelihood of vocalizing. My first 'zon (female BFA, Liza Loo) was extremely quiet except for when she chose to speak. The more 'zons I added to my flock the louder things became, as they seem to feed on each other and encourage other to greater heights of vocalizations. Even with all that, there are times (such as right now), when all I can hear is the Quakers playing. The 'zons are very quiet. Sometimes when they're all laughing, talking and calling at the same time I can barely hear myself think.

Another thing to consider is the pitch of the voice. My Mexican Red Heads are very shrill and much more irritating to listen to than any of my other 'zons, no matter how loud.

Of course, none of this means a thing. I'm crazy about those 'zons and find them completely delightful, loud or quiet.

Well Nat.
I have to agree with Joanie. The MRHA's are very very shrill. Jasper can peel the paint off the walls with his newly learned scream.
