Soon to be Amazon owner!

Well, my Husband has been wanting a Zon for a while and has had everyone on the lookout for a rescue. The call came tonight. We are going tomorrow to pick up a female orange wing that has had a rough life. A breeder who is a friend of a friend discovered this little girl at the home of some Amish people. She was in a wire cage just big enough for her to turn around and had no perches and of course no toys.
She gave the bird to a friend and he has been working with her for 2 months and said she was doing fine until 2 wks ago and she started nipping him. Probably due to breeding season. I have no idea how old she is, but she is closed banded so I should be able to find out from that. Anyway.... this should be the last home for her in this little game of "Pass the Zon". So I may be on here asking for lots of advice!

Congratulations.

The orange wings, especially the female orange wings, are considered very choice amazon parrots. I have a female yellow nape and she's a doll. I really love the amazons. They are extremely loyal and very loving to their special people. Hopefully, this will be a love match for everyone involved.

Congratulations on your new friend. She's very blessed to be coming into your home. Female 'zons tend to be extremely sweet.

Well.... we brought our little Zon home last night. We got the rest of the story, the people had her in a cockatiel cage because they had tried putting her with a male and setting them up for breeding and it didn't work out. They liked the male and kept him as a pet, but the female got put in this little cage with no perches. I'm not sure how my friend's friend found him... but she told the lady that she needed a bigger cage, the second time she came back and saw that the Zon was still in the same situation, she said "That's it this bird is going with me!" and the owner had no objections. The guy we got her from was fostering her until someone could find her a good home. That would be us! She is missing a couple of toes (probably got bitten off by the male) and she is really nervous and scared but only did minor damage to Hubby's hands last night Would toweling her in order to get her out of the cage set us back any? She doesn't seem afraid of towels, she more afraid of hands. Right now we are going to give her a few days to settle in to her new cage and get used to us. Even though Hubby's hands were bleeding last night.. I think he has found a new love.
I'll get pics on here as soon as she calms down some.

I'm no Zon expert so I'll leave the real advice to Joanie and Nancy. Personally, though, I wouldn't towel at this point, especially if she's not used to it (probably not). Give her some time to settle in. By all means, interact with her and try to handle her, but I wouldn't towel. Nope.

I didn't think it would be a very good idea. We had some progress though! She hasn't eaten since we brought her home last night, so I fixed her some sweet potato and put it in her dish. She wouldn't go near it, so I opened her food dish door and started picking through her food and making "yum yum" noises. She couldn't stand it,she had to hustle over and find out what was so good! LOL! I sat by the cage and made yummy noises while she ate a lot of food, a few pellets, a bite of sweet potato, and a bunch of sunflower seeds (gotta work on that) but she did eat, and didn't mind me being there.
I think she will be just fine after she settles in.

That's great news that your new friend is finally eating Let us know how she progresses. Does she have a name yet, or are you waiting to see what her personality is like to fit the right name to her?

Her name is Baby. It just kept coming out. You know...... "poor baby!", "come here baby", "We're not going to hurt you, baby" ect....... It just fits.
She is so much like a small baby, she has so much to learn.
