Bleeding foot - Please help
My two Amazon's (Rocky & Babe) stay at my office, along with my African Grey (Bubbles). Of course they live in 2 separate cages. I came into my office today, and noticed the Rocky's foot was bleeding. It seems as though he has pulled out some of his feathers on his right leg, and it's swollen and red with a bit of blood. It's NOT bleeding continuously, just looks like blood sitting on his foot. I'm not sure what to do. I've had them for 13 years and I've never experienced anything like this!
Please help!! I'm worried!! Thanks!! Lulu |

Re: Bleeding foot - Please help
Hi Donna,
Thanks for the reply! I did take her to the emergency room - it was after hours - they gave her an injection and a collar, which she bite off that night. She started biting her other foot today, so I'm taking her to see a specialist a little later this afernoon. Thanks! Hopefully it's nothing too serious! |

Re: Bleeding foot - Please help
Hi again!
Well, we took her to see an Avian Vet, they didn't know what was wrong with her. They said maybe she got an infection from something in the cage, or something is irritating her feet. I can't understand what could be worrying her, because we haven't done anything differentfor the last 14 years. The Dr. gave us cream for her feet, and antiseptic to soak them. They wanted to keep her overnight, and put the collar on her, but I couldn't afford $600. She is still taking the antibiotic that she got from the emergency room, and we are now also putting Benadryl (children's benadryl) in her water - as per the Dr. She seems to be chewing on them still, but not as bad - at least the blood is not pouring out. :'( I just hope and pray it gets better.... |

Re: Bleeding foot - Please help
Go to a store such as Walmart or any pharmacy and pick up some 100% PURE ALOE VERA GEL. Cuts and scratches and minor bleeding can be controlled with Aloe gel. The picking can happen from dryness of the legs or toes or from temporary irritation from perches, from dry scales on the legs or toes and also the inability of certain feathers to fall off when it's time. The bird then pulls at them and makes the area bleed. This problem happens very often to birds in their wing areas. A gel such as Aloe is put on the area 2 times a day, the area absorbs the Aloe quickly and irritation usually subsides within 2 days.
Because of the many reasons that I mentioned above, the vet was not able to give you a straight answer. It's a good idea that you didn't leave the bird there overnight. The answer would have been the same. Using Aloe on your bird's feet periodically is always a good idea. The parrot doesn't have to have a problem in order to use the Aloe. It's very soothing to a parrot. The item is the one on the right. make sure is says 100% Pure. If ingested, there's no problem-----------Dave ![]() |
