I have a YNA, I can't speak for the DYH's, although I'm sure they are similar. Elvis is very protective of his castle, quite like a firing breathing dragon!!!!LOL If I take him off of his cage and into another room, I can handle him, but in his room, on his cage, no way!! We have to be very careful around him, he has no problem taking swipes at us, and he will draw blood!!! However, we also got him when he was 15 years old, and he was treated unkind in his past, but in general, Amazons can be aggressive and cranky!! I would never think of letting him on my shoulder, or that close to my face or neck, in general. But as with all creatures, they are all individual, and someone may have one that is a total cuddle bug. We just love him as he is. He says some words, mostly Hello, he uses that word for many different things, by saying it in different ways, but we have learned what he means. I know he can say his name, but he only says it every blue moon, and he says it with disdain. I have heard him say whole sentences in the shower, that is where he talks the most, otherwise, he is actually a very quiet bird. But again, how they are raised affects there whole life, his past was abusive, so he doesn't much like people, but he loves all our other animals, he is fine with any bird smaller than him, he never shows aggression with other birds or pets, he doesn't love our african grey, but if they happen to invade each others cages, they do not fight, they sit on opposite sides of the cage. From the DYH's that I have met, to me they seem to talk more than the YNA's, but I was told my senegal would not be a talker, and you can't shut him up, he'll learn any new word we want him to, so there are no guarantees that any particular bird will talk, even if it is capable.
