Amazone sexual maturity
Hi every one, I was directed here by someone at parrotforum to seek any further advice you may have about my B/F Amazon...so I'll repost what I asked on that site. Every suggestion helps!
I have a 5 year old yellow crowned Amazon who has been an absolute nightmare since around this month. He started off by jumping off of his playgym and dinner stand to try to rip me open with his beak anytime I would walk by. Then he progressed to screaming incessantly anytime, and I am not really sure what to do to change this behavior. I see agression when he plays with toys and bite me more seriously and sometime coming, biting and going back to the cage. I've bought him 2 months ago and seller said he is 4 y.old so know seems 5and I cant say he's been such a great bird until now but until thise days he played very good with me without attacking me and bited less and less.He learned to step up...it was very nice to see Unfortunately, if this behavior continues and I cannot correct it, I will have to find Jacob a new home, which I really don't want to do. Sorry for such a long post, hopefully you all can help me out. Thank you! |

I can't tell you alot, as every bird has its own reasons. The first thing I usually sugguest is to look back and see if you can think of anything that has changed. Anything that could affect his world. Like moving his cage, new furniture, new curtains, new cologne, new hairstyle, new pet or person, there are so many things, that may seem insignificant to us, but may be a big deal to a parrot that is in the same room all day. Sometimes we just get to busy also, and just rush around by them instead of being calm we get hyper.
Other things could be he may not be feeling well and may need to see a vet; he could be hormonal, which you need to give him his space if he is. he may just be trying to see how much he can control you. There are too many conditions, and circumstances that could effect him that more would need to be known. There are a few good behavioralists around, but most would want to see the bird, and most prefer to see the bird in their environment to get a proper read. I recommend you to get a couple of books by Joannie Doss [you can get them at Parrot House ] They are books on reading your amazons body language. They are easy to read, and Joannie has worked with amazons for many years. This would be a start of things to look into anyway.
