They do it in pet stores, and the birds get pretty damaged in the process. Some of the smaller pet stores have the saddest birds, i feel like buying them all and setting them all free. they are considered agricultural pests too :( and sometimes hunted for meat, especially in the more rural area wher i live. That's the depressing thing. I can't tell you how many people have made little comments about how my birds would taste, (so wrong i know) and i also have a pet agouti, which people usually eat too, and he is a lovely animal. On a brighter note, your babies are adorable, and amazing that they already have their own personalities. It's wonderful seeing them growing up, but sad to leave the sweet baby stage behind! looking forward to more pictures.

How in the world did you manage to get a pet agouti? I have been through Sangre Grande many times...you must really live in a rural area...I am trying to get my husband to buy land in a more rural setting but he doesn't want to give up his 10 minute commute to work.... I would love an agouti as they seem to be just like large guinea pigs(which I also have). I miss having Ferrets...it is an animal that we have in the states but they are not here and I don't think they ever will be unless I bring them down and it is so expensive to keep them in quarentine..then I am not sure if they could survive the treatment that they would get in quarentine..anyhow..still in the planning stages of that....is your agouti friendly? I see them in the zoo and of course have seen it cooked and skinned and all that...yuck...couldn't imagine eating it...let alone eating parrot..let alone horse..a vet friend of mine works the track and says that it is pretty popular meat here too..monkey and iguana are not my idea of a meal either. Amazing what some people will eat.....when my mother in law referred to my parrots as little chickens I got a little worried...lol...

ages

Those are beautiful birds. I wonder if you could tell me the ages in those pictures. I have an Amazon parrot I bought on the street here in Mexico, sam kind of deal, and I am watching his progress but I don't know how old he is. I've had him about ten days now and he has progressed from not able to really stand up to perching and climbing a little. The past couple of days he has been trying to fly. This seems like astounding progress to me, but I don't know. Here is a pic if anyone can tell me how old he is, and when he should be weaned. Also what TYPE of bird? The top of the head looks like it will be blue.

Im not sure on age but that looks like it could be either a red-lored or a lilac crowned amazon, or I could be way off. Either way its adorable!

But now that I look at it again I see a faint white line between the blue and red...could it be a spectacled?

Red-lored is in my signature (aries)

Yeah I think he's either a red lored or white fronted....there is a little dab of white between the red and the blue right above the beak, but the red doesn't go all the way around his eyes....also, how do you pronounce red lored? is it lord or lo-red?
