omg

Well i just got a 4 year old bfa male.Ive had him for about a week things have been going pretty good.Ive been taking things slow.Talking to him softly just trying to get him used to me.He started talking 2 days ago.He says "what" alot so hes getting a little used to me.I tried to get him to step up but he wasnt up to it.He hasnt bittin anybody hard yet.Well about 10 min ago i was watching some bfa's on you tube and that was a mistake. He was on top of his cage he came over to the computer to see the bird on youtube and bam the next thing i knew he was chasing me around my house trying to bite me.I finally got him back on the cage then bam he flew off and tried to bite me again. His wings are clipped so he kinda went straight to the ground. Is this because of mating season?is he evan sexually mature?he will be 4 in june? Please help im scared to let him out now

Could very well be... Amazons morph during mating season... Dr. Jekyl ... Mr. Hyde kinda thing. Yes he very possibly is at the point in life where is becoming "mature." Let him settle down... start all over again.. No more birdie vids on You Tube... if so turn the volume down. Might want to check on those wingers too. You should never have them cut all of the way back just in case they decide "to go for it" they can atleast glide to the ground. If they hit the ground too hard they can break their breastbone which can be "real" bad. Good Luck!

sorry, i had to giggle when i read your post - it sounds like you're pretty well on track. one week is still kind of short, and you're already establishing some relationship. that's pretty impressive.
you just might have found something that your BFA absolutely dislikes (or likes too much - either way, something that's best avoided). my guys have their quirks as well - just as an example: valo gets overly excited when somebody handles coins... if he is on your shoulder you WILL get bitten. it's just something that we have to respect i guess.... so yeah, no more birdie youtube vids without earplugs

good luck - please keep us posted

well, you gotta give him a chance first... a week is only a very short time period. do you know anything about his past? there might be some issues to work through, but as i said, after a week, you can't say anything.
leave him in his cage for a while, talk to him and start introducing yourself that way as well as the kids.. he might warm up sooner than you think

I am so sorry that is happening with your birdie guy! I also adopted a 4 year old BFA 1 week ago today.

I've not started trying to hand tame him yet, but just wanted to let you know I'm in the same boat. I'm sorry that happened, I'm sure he doesn't hate you, since you are taking such good care of him.

But that doesn't take away the physical and emotional pain of a bite. I hope you'll be able to try again later, and have more success. How frustrated you must be!

I am the area co-ordinator for a local parrot rescue and we just took in an orange winged amazon day before yesterday who's been given up due to agression.

First thing I would recommend for a new parrot that has any agression issues would be a wing trim; even a very light wing trim will keep them a bit more on guard. I keep my little FIDs flighted as we have cats; howevere, all but one had a wing clip until they learned their manners.
