Amazon and figs
Hey everyone,
I have a fig tree in my backyard, and it's a great perching spot for my Amazon, as he cannot fly due to previous neglect. In the late summer and fall, the figs start to ripen, and I was wondering if it's okay for him to munch on them. Last summer, I let him try, and he absolutely loved it! He was screaming and giving me the googly eyes and everything. I figure in the Amazon Rainforest, the fig trees there are a akin to the watering holes of Africa, everything gathers around them to eat the figs, so it shouldn't be harmful, but I thought I'd check. Think it's an ok treat? Thanks, Loren |

I hope not, I give figs to my bird. I have found a list of safe and not safe plants and it says some figs are okay and some aren't. Here is the link to the list. ParrotChronicles.com It is not Amazon specific but I hope it helps.

Safe Figs ?
Most parrots love figs (they eat mainly the tiny crunchy seeds while discarding most of the flesh ) my only concern is that since there are dozens of fig types, are the ones in your backyard safe & non-toxic ? If he's eaten them before, with no adverse effects, they're probably OK. However no harm in getting them checked out. Have you tasted them ? If they're Ok for humans they may be OK for parrots.
