Birdman789,
It really depends on a number of factors, not the least of which is your definition of "good." What are *you* looking for in a bird? A cuddler? A talker? A centerpiece? Each bird is going to be an individual, first. Wally had a great idea of visiting a rescue and seeing the 'Zons available there. I have a Red Lored Amazon. I find her delightful, comical, quirky . . . She loves to snuggle at night, but quite often during the day doesn't want me to touch her at all. She loves chin rubs most of the time, neck scritches some of the time, generally at night while we snuggle. She is the loudest of the 'Zons I have here, but that's not saying much, and I bet it won't be true after Sunday my when newly adopted Mealy comes home! Anyway, she is shy with strangers, only wants to be handled by me for the omst part and then only when she wants it. My Orange Wing on the other hand *loves* everyone. She flies right over to any new person and generally lands on their head, and if I take her off them she keeps flying back until they greet her. I can touch her all over, cuddle her, kiss her, she has never once biten me (*knocks on wood*). She came to me as a foster baby at approximately 2 weeks of age. Aspen, the Red Lored, came to me at about 13 (?) weeks of age, though, so ? I also have two Cubans, both males, one is sweet, nervous and shy, the other is bold, outspoken, and at the moment in the throws of hormonal male behavior. They came to be at ages 2.5 years and ~8 years, respectively. Each one of these birds is a unique individual first, and a member of their species second. Best to get to know a few potential candidate sand see who fits in with you . . . Good luck! Hope this helps a little! |

All amazons are good, but its really great to find one you can bond with. I have bonded freindship with my BFA [blue front amazon], Pepe; and my wife has her YCA [yellow crown amazon], Oscar.

Research
There is no "perfect" bird. We have Max, OWA, and Nikko, YCA. Max loves to be with my husband but not cuddling, mainly just sharing space on his knee or shoulder. Nikko is a cuddler. She also loves to play and talks up a storm. Both are wonderful Amazons, totally different in personality. Max is probably 7 years old now, and Nikko is going on 3 in September. I believe Max to be a male, Nikko is a surgically sexed female. Max doesn't like me in his space and very loudly lets us know. Nikko favors me, but loves attention from anyone. When researching the different Amazons, note character traits - but always keep in mind that each bird is also an individual.http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/...4304/birds.htm

Remember too that not all handfed babies are going to be cuddly. I have a handfed blue fronted amazon DNA'd female. NOT CUDDLY! She is still a baby and while she loves to sit with me,next to me, on me, she does not like to be petted. I have to love her for the bird she is, not the bird I think she should be.
When you get a bird, you have to put some of your expectations aside and get to know your new pet. I would like a cuddly bird sure! But my girl talks up a storm, is so very funny with her antics, I would never trade her for a cuddler! She may not be the bird I expected, but I love her anyway.

Our Oscar, 5yr old YCA is a cuddler and friend to my wife. He respects me, but I'm just a flock member and a rival for my wife's attention. We purchased him from a bird store that had purchased him from a breeder. He was 1 yr old when the pet shop got him, and we visited with him for about 6 months before we brought him home. He had a stubborn streak, but by the time we brought him home, he was a cuddle bug with my wife. He is very outgoing, which when we first met him you would have never known. He uses around 35 words, and uses them appropriately.
Pepe, 12 yr old BFA, on the other hand, is my cuddler and my friend. Pepe we rehomed when he was 6 yrs old, and somewhat mistreated. He had an issue with women. He has grown out of that, but is for the most part a one person bird. We have a deep attachment to one another. He is not much of a talker, but he loves to dance, whistle, and sing in an unknown tongue. This is why I sugguest a refuge. These birds have lived a life, usually unfortunate. With love and patience, and if you connect with one, they are such great companions. Take your time and don't rush into a descission. Find the match that's right for you and the bird. Get to know each other. It is a very long term commitment and you want it to be fun and enjoyable.
