Our little Puchi died suddenly.
Puchi, our Amazon green parrot, was fine one day and dead the next morning (in a span of eight hours she was gone). We only had her for about a month and a half. We believe she was about a year old; she was almost done molting her chest feathers and was already adult sized.
The only medicine she had was this med to get rid of fleas/mites. We were told that she was given this med as a precaution right before she was given to us. We called to tell our vet about this, he said it was normal.
We were hand feeding her once to twice a day. We fed her bananas, papaya, guava and mango, but mostly bananas. We gave her water each time we gave her food; she was too young to know how to get water out of a water bottle. We tried.
We kept her inside our house, near a closed window that received very little sun light, but would take her outside and place her on a large perch almost every single afternoon, for two to three hours each time. It was set below the branches of a large lemon tree (she was always in the shade). Sometimes she would walk around our house and sit on a chair if the weather wasn't very nice outside.
As of two weeks ago Puchi lived completely outside (in a cage). The cage was placed right next to the perch she sat on everyday. She seemed just fine. We moved her because all pet birds in Honduras live outside. The weather had been calm and warm, both day and night. We hadn't taken her to a vet yet; ironically her appointment was scheduled for the day we found her dead.
One thing I do believe is that she was taken from the wild, unfortunately a common occurrence in Honduras. We were told the opposite by the guy who sold her to us but I now think she was wild. Maybe this had something to do with her sudden death (an illness or disease). But like I said she was very energetic, friendly and had a very healthy appetite up until the night before she died.
We are absolutely devastated! We're naturally blaming each other for her death. Is there something we did wrong?
