White Fronted Needs Love

Hey there everyone!
My husband and I run a small rescue in NM and have a young white fronted amazon that needs a lot of TLC. Our only hold up is that this guy has made it very clear that although he could probably learn to tolerate people, he really wants to be an aviary bird, with other amazons that are just like him. We are planning to send him to a sanctuary (not my first choice when placing a bird) but I wanted to see if anyone here could offer suggestions first. Here's BB.

Thanks a bunch!
-Anna

He is very beautiful. I like the red masking around his eyes. Is he wild caught? I have never seen a white fronted amazon. Your pics are always so nice to look at and professional looking. Once again, thanks for sharing them with us.

Your welcome - and I'm not sure of board rules here, so someone please let me know if i'm posting inappropriately here. Every forum is different but these forums seem more relaxed than some. BB is not wild caught but I am quite sure that he was parent raised. He is still quite young but extremely hormonal and territorial. He seems to identify with the other birds wonderfully and I doubt he was ever abused or neglected...just made up his mind from the get-go that he wants to be a bird and that's FINAL. He is gentleman enough to step up onto a towel and spends a few hours a day near me on a play perch but he doesn't enjoy a second of it except for the really tasty food. Just like an amazon...the way to his heart is through his stomach. If I could grow feathers I would, but I doubt I'll be able to work that magic trick anytime soon and until I do, I doubt he's going to play fair.

Would he do well in a home with other birds who are both BIRD and HUMAN socialized? I am assuming he doesnt care to be coddled and coo'd. Does he play with toys? Does he play well with others and do you have an idea of his age and if he is really a he? Reason I ask is because I have a grey who is a great bridge between human and bird who is a male ( Im wondering how it would work) I also ave a blue front baby who is a female I am trying to bring up the same way. I also have a 40 YO Mac who sound a bit like him - wants to be near and play and eat but please dont make me cuddle? I let you scrtich my head occasionally but

Hi there and so sorry it's taken me a couple of days to get back here to answer your questions about BB.

BB is younger, probably under 10 and we are unsure of his sex. He seems indifferent to being out in our aviary with the other birds, but he is very protective of his space. He is no where near eager to come out of his cage and strikes the bars to try to ward off anyone who comes too close for his comfort (so hard that he ends up bruising his beak). As I said, I have been able to wrap my hand in a towel and get him to step up onto the towel, but he is not happy about it and not happy to be away from his safe place. I do really feel that the best, most soothing thing for him would be to be able to live his life out with another bird - not because he can't be brought to a point where he will be ok with humans, but rather because he just seems to prefer being a bird and not a pet. I am quite confident that I could get him to a point where he would willingly step up and may even be calm on a perch in my kitchen, but I doubt very much that this would, ultimately, make him happy.

I'm looking for a home for him where he can find the happiness I think he's looking for. If you think you might be able to provide that, we can talk, but I have not introduced him to any of the other birds on the property, mostly because I am sure he would be scared spitless since our other amazons are about twice his size. Let me know.
