Dear LORD!!!

So I am on my way home from work yesterday, Tuesday ( only off for about 10 min) and I get a call on my cell. A number I am not familure with. Answer and it, and a lady heard from a friend of a friend of a friend (lol ) about me and my U2 and my Macaw. She found out on Monday that they were moving Wednesday morning to Colorado!!!! That she has a Blue fronted amazon and needs a good home ASAP. Since I have large bird experience, that is why she called me. So I asked a little about the fid. He is 19 years old (wild caught when he was about 1 1/2 ) his name is Tony. He is very hand scared (not shy, terrified). He isn't holdable at all. So I ask her when she wanted me to pick him up (mind you this conversation was at 4:15 p.m.) she said around (5:30 p.m.)
She was begging for me to help out, but she also wanted $ for him!!!!! I said I can't afford that and I would take him but no pay. So We picked Tony up and his cage was terribly dirty, not to mention their house was really dirty!
Brought Tony home and got out hot water, bleach and a little soap and scrub brush! Scrubbed the heck out of EVERYTHING, got it all put together and settled him in the house! He has NEVER been around or hear "real" birds, so I think my U2 and B&G really put him in for a first! He so far is very quiet (honeymoon I know), but he did live inan apt before so he isn't a screamer!

all this happened within 2 hours!!!!! WOW

You are incredibly good to jump into all of that without a chance to really think about it. From your description of his old home and the condition of his cage he might be thinking he died and won the lottery.

Thanks. I didn't want him to go to the dog pound and that is where they were going to take him if I didn't!!!

I feel so bad for him, him more so than my other fids because he was trapped and caught in the wild. He was a free flying bird in Brazil! Someone took his whole happines away! My U2 & macaw were born in captivity. Not that that is good also, but they didn't have the taste of what Tony had! Breaks my heart!

I'm glad she called you and you were able to help out!

I feel the same way about the wild caught birds. My Diddle and Alfie both were wild caught and then open banded when it became illegal to import wild caught birds. They are both really happy here I know but a part of me wonders what they would have if they were left in the wild to live as they were meant to.

Can't wait to see pics of the new fid!

I hope your QT him in another room? esp if was wild caught and never to a vet and tested?? He may not show signs of anything and still be a carrier - yes, for that long.

And I would bet he has worms. It is great you were able to help him out!

Are you planning on keeping Tony? Or finding him a loving home?

I only ask because I know you were having some aggression probs with Ellie that were upsetting you. Amazons are not exactly known for their... um... predictable temperaments. Not unless you consider the fact that they are usually a bit unpredictable all the time as predictable! LOL

Thanks all for your help and replies. He was caught in the wild 18 years ago. Natually has has since then been to a vet! I will take him to the vet when I can. And of course I am quarentining him. I know better not to!

He doesn't come out of his cage. He is also not clipped so I don't want to let him out and then him possibly fly and get to my other fids! As they aren't too paticularly happy if they are by each other, but they love to talk across the house.

Tony is in a different rooom, but if he sits in one spot on his cage he can see Teal. Last night hubby and I were playing with Teal and Tony took a very good intrest into what was going on. So I see that a possivle sighn as potential progress. (lets hope). He hasn't been hand tame or held in over 8 years, so it will be even smaller than babysteps.

I will try to get picts sometime soon. I am planning on heeping him.

Oh and last night he does the phone ring down pat. I was running all over the house looking for the damn phone till I realized when I found it, it wasn't my phone!!! Little bugger
