It looks like you have a very cute yellow nape amazon there. As far as age there is no way to know the age, you cannot simply tell the age of a bird by looking at it once it is full grown. Is your bird banded? Usually the bands will have the year the bird hatched and if it doesn't have the year it can always be traced and you can locate the breeder and get more info. If your bird is not banded then there is really no way to know. What age were you told he/she is?

Yellow nape, relatively young (my guess is less than 8 actually, but so much depends on care), gorgeously feathered, decent weight and health. Someone loved that little sweety very much. You gots a good one there. Watch the diet and you will have a friend for life.

Thanks guys for your prompt response. You see my Arnie is not banded. The only info that I have is that he/she was imported into Malaysia from a breeder in the Phillipines. Arnie's previous surrogate dad said that Arnie would be around 18 months old. From research I thought that Arnie was either a Yellow Fronted/Crowned (nominate) or a sub-specie the Panama Yellow Fronted/Crowned. I actually discounted Arnie being a Yellow Naped because the size and colouring (oops colonial spelling) of its beak and feet do not fit the description. Wow now I am confused. Would it help if I were to get further photos of Arnie's anatomy? If so, could you provide me with your requirements?

Actually Arnie is so sweet. In the last week I managed to train Arnie to accept being pet (loves head scratches), lie down on my palm and step up onto a dowel. His previous Daddy was amazed because Arnie could not do any of those things whilst with him. I am presently trying to get Arnie to step up onto my hands. Arnie appears to be very hesitant. Guess I'll have to be patient, slow down the pace and work on it. Since Arnie may even out-live me we have lots of time. You guys have been great. Thanks so very much for your help and hopefully further assistance. Peace and Love Lawrence.

Might be...

I'm thinking this is a yellow-crowned instead of a yellow-nape. I'm basing this off the red patch that I think I see on the sides of hes beak. Here's a link with a picture:

Species Profiles

If we had some pics of his tail spread and wings outstretched.. that would help.

Not a Yellow Nape at all. Either a Yellow Crowned or a Panama and by the beak Id say Yellow crowned, but Sometimes its hard to tell depending on age and subspecies.
Panama Amazon, Panama Yellow-headed Amazon, Amazona panamensis
The Panama is born with a dark beak but it lightens with age and there is a period where the two species are hard to tell apart unless they are side by side. The Panama being smaller and darker. They are more common now then they used to be.

Say anyone with experience with Yellow Crowned Zons got any care and training tips for me? I have been having some trouble getting Arnie to step-up onto my hands. Arnie's fine with stepping up onto a dowel but my hands he just won't.
