Sweet Odor

My Yellow Naped Amazon has a honey-sweet smell (best way I can describe it) coming from her head area. Is this the way they smell. It is not overpowering but noticebale when you get close to her head. Is that a gland smell?

It sounds like the natural "Amazon Smell". Some people find it offensive, and other "bird weirdos" (like us) think it smells great. lol =) It might become more noticeable if your Amazon hasn't showered recently, or with hormonal shifts.

As long as it smells pretty much the same, and isn't upleasant, it's just one of the perks of living with Zons!

Threw me when I first smelt it. If Bogey hasn't showered for awhile the smell can get a bit over powering.

I had a little white fronted amazon who never gave off that smell. Tigger does any time he is excited or stressed. The smell grows on you, I don't mind it at all, but at first was like what the heck?
I went to a worskshop put on by Barbara Hidenreich (sp) and Robin Shewolski (sp). Robin suggested using scents in enrichment activities. She made the interesting comment that researchers are not sure how well parrots smell. But if you think about it, the amazon smell should serve some purpose. Maybe they can smell the scent? So could we use scent in enrichment the way zoos add lavender oil to lions enrichment toys? It was something to think about

I love the honey amazon smell, Nia reeks of it. Pionus also have a very similar smell, but not as strong. Hubby thinks I'm weird that I'll stop in the middle of a good head skritch to lean down and huff some sweet neck feathers.
