Question Amazons... Information please

Alright. Could someone break the amazons down for me? ALL of them seem like COMPLETLY different parrots. If I'm correct I believe that's right they just all have the name amazon in their name but that doesn't mean they are going to act the same?

Now I've heard that Napes can be mean? Now does is this again one of those 'depends on the bird' or can they snap?

Double Yellow headed amazons are my favorite.

I just learned about the Mexican Red Headed ones...

I'm not sure about the blue fronts and the Orange wings. Could someone maybe break them all down for me?

Thanks again guys!!!

Check out World Parrot Trust's parrot encyclopedia. Should cover your question (or come really close).

Wow, you have been all over the place and now back to Amazons where you started with a DYH. What happened to the Grey you really wanted to get? Oh, and the Cockatoo? I thought you were on the verge of bringing one or the other home.

There are many on-line sources to find about the different Amazon species, so do your research!

The link degumom is a good one to look at.

I will say that the rumors that are there about many of the ammies is not neccesarily always true.
I absolutely love my Yellow Nape and know may others that do as well.
Some one on another board described them as spicy and that is definitely true.

They can be great ammies and are great birds. That isn't to say that there are other Napes out there that are evil, but you will see that in just about any type of amazon or bird for that matter. There are always going to be birds that are "evil" and those that aren't.

The main thing about Zons is that they all have a zest for life. They love to hang upside down and scream - Mine does this normally in the morning.
They love food and bathes with a passion and they also love toys.
My zon is always fighting with a toy and trying to "kill" it. It sounds like he has gotten caught on something and is screaming bloody murder the whole time.

They are quite independent birds and will allow a head or chin scratch on their terms only.
Personally I love them.
Toos are great but oh so needy and very problematic and greys... well not for me unles it was the Timneh but that is just me.

Reta- So many people were telling me how bad cockatoos are that it made me think if I really should get one and where my life is going in the near future. The Grey I was going to get turned out to be a scam. I did post that. And there's nothing wrong with the Cockatoo I'm just wondering if I should really get it when everyone is saying how bad they are.

Are zons more independent then Greys are?

Zons are definitely more independent than a grey.

Toos can be great birds but they do have lots of issues and getting one is something that should be seriously thought out. I know someone right now that has a rehomed Too. They are deeling with some serious issues right now and quite a bit of aggression towards other members of the family. Hopefully they can get it worked out but it is going to take a lot of time and consistent behavior on the owners part.

All birds will have their own issues, but you have to look at what your lifestyle is and where it is going in the future. Do you have more school to take, a significant other, kids, lots of moving or out of town work due to job etc etc.

So many things can impact your feathered friends.

Amazons have the least problems with behavioral issues of plucking and neurosis then greys or Toos, but they can have issues as well especially if it is springtime and even then it will depend on the individual bird and how they are raised and taken care of.

Research is essential with any bird but especially the larger birds.

Any hands on experience with the birds and visiting that can be done will help immensely. Talking to owners of these birds will also help as long as they let you know the good and bad of having this bird. I specifically stress the bad part - you need to know these things - it will help in the final decision as to whether you can deal with what may come in the future.
