I was at the vet the other day with my beloved DYH Sunny-bird (the love of my life). I took him in for updated blood work and a beak trim. The techs were all surprised at how friendly and handleable he is and mentioned that they had never met such a nice DYH before.
They asked me to meet a bird they had just taken in. Before I new it I was holding this lovely, beautiful Orange Wing Amazon and I felt that feeling I always feel when I meet a bird: such awe at such an amazing creature, so beautiful and so intelligent. I don't get it - here's the story: A family that has had this bird for 15 years or so left on vacation and paid a pet sitter to walk the dogs. The pet sitter took the dogs to her house because the home was in such disrepair that she didn't want to go there. While she was there, though she saw they had a cat and a bird and contacted them to find out who was supposed to care for them? They said their daughter would come by. She found out from the daughter a week later that no such arrangement existed and she never goes there and does not have a key... The pet sitter went back to the home to recover the "dead bird" who had been left only to find this bright, lively bird who could not wait to get the heck out of there... She also fed the cat while she was there. So my feeling is this - the petsitter is a hero because she followed up until she confirmed the other animals were okay, she convinced them to sign over the bird since they had no real motivation to care for it and had essentially left it to die... Heros always follow their gut and go the distance. I am so grateful. In a few days this precious and beautiful bird will be coming home to live with me in my crazy house with my spoiled amazons... |

It is a terrible situation but I am glad it resolved itself so well. It is amazing what can be accomplished when people go that extra mile.
OWA's are beautiful. Keep us posted on him and all of your birds.

Hurray! What a miracle that this bird made it out of that situation alive AND will be going to live with someone who will take good care of him/her. Your new amazon couldn't be luckier to have you. It sounds like the little fellow had just enough food to scrape by, whew!
