Question Should I?

I just lost my 2 yr old African Grey he flew away in april. I dont want another grey or a bird right now but I feel like something is missing... I know this family i have known them my whole life they have a 30+ Blue front amazon... she said i could babysit anytime i wanted. He comes from a home that is not smoke free he has no blue, because he doesnt get the fruits and veggies, he cant fly and only says about 5 words. The question is should I take him for a while and give him some attention and try to get his blue back? he sits on top of a cage always and doesnt get one bit of attention because the owners are afraid. I have a cat and my cat never bothered my grey because the grey always defended but he did go in his cage at night. The amazon doesnt go in the cage he just sits on top so I want to take him so bad but my mom is like well thats all he knows but I feel like he deserves better. Someone would always be here with him I work nights and my boyfriend works days so someone would be here except 1 hour in the morning he leaves for work at 6 30 and I get home at 720 so I want to take him but Im not sure... Any help?

sounds like a good opportunity to get to know the bird and find out if it's the right fit for both of you. Certainly he will get more love and attention and better care than where he is now, and your not locked into a permanent decision. If you work nights though, amazons tend to be very loud morning and evenings, more so than a grey. Mine is quite vocal, all birds are different, maybe this is a quiet one or maybe you can wait till he's gets it out of his system for the morning to go to sleep. Mine carries on from around 6:00 am till 7:00 am hollering and raising Cain.

I have never heard that one. "he has no blue because of no fruits and vegis" I have seen many a BF on a dry diet with plenty of blue. THe amount of blue he has is genetic.

the Blue

Well she feeds him the Walmart parrot food the cheap stuff... and when she did feed him more fruits and veggies he had more blue he has none now. maybe it just works with him I'm not sure but it seems that way.

Well, your description is clear - that amazon is not well cared for.

You could always take him in and give it a year or two to see how your relationship goes, but he needs help either way. Smoking around a bird is a death sentence. Their respiratory systems are so much more efficient/sensitive than ours.

I hope he gets help. Just because he lives that way does not mean he wants that life - he just doesn't have a choice right now.
