New Foods to try

Okay, so Toby (MRH) has been given a seed mix only for the last 5 years as best as I can determine. (he is sleeping on the desk beside me right now LOL)

I am looking for the best things to try to get him a better diet. I guess what I mean is what regular food might I have the best success with or does it vary too much for every bird..

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Btw, I had some cucumber he actually mouthed but didn't eat so I am hoping he will at least try other stuff.

Get a bag of frozen mixed veggie(corn, green beans, carrots) and bag of frozen peas, cut sweet potatoe in cunks and boil till just tender. Prepare brown rice. Heat frozen veggies. Add just a little of each to a bowl, sweet potatos just 1-2 small chunks. 2-3 grenn grapes sliced and tiny pieces of apple. Serve warm if possible. You might want to sprinkle some pellts in to soften and see if he touches them. You can sprinkle a tiny bit of seed on it and mix in. This way the bird will hunt for the seed but has to taste and touch the other stuff.

Hmm, that does sound like a good idea. It should be okay for both my amazon and my conure (smaller chunks for the GCC).

I'll give it a try. Now I just have to find some dry fruit/nut hand treats. They used to feed him peanuts but I don't think peanuts are very good for him.

Thank you.

New foods to try

By human grade mixed nut assortment, unsalted. Just give a couple a day.

Thanks Greycloud,
I bought some unsalted nuts and some dried fruit and nut mix (no added sugar or salt) as treats. I also bought some brown rice and I will try some rice and veggies.

I just hope these little devils like it LOL

thanks again

How about a slow conversion to pellets? You have to watch out with amazons because they have this tendency to become obese and develop fatty liver disease.

Are pellets going to be that much better for him? I know real food is the key but I know he hasn't had any fresh food and I have to try to get him converted to that (hopefully).

In the mean while though I guess I could slowly add pellet mix over a few weeks if the pellets are going to add to his nutritional needs.
