It is great that you took both birds. Amazons are all different and have very individual personalities. You can feed the same things - pellets, sprouts, veggies, occasional fruit, and nuts like walnuts and almonds.
Amazons are known for obesity. Don't be surprised if this bird loves everything including junk food. Good news is you will be able to find favorites for training pretty easily. Bad news: few Amazons live their life expectancy due to improper diet, fatty liver disease, and deficiencies. But get a good diet and you are good to go! Good luck! |

I'm glad your taking him, it will be better for both birds to be together. My grey and amazon have a truce, neither one will touch the others cage or toys and they get along fine. My amazon is the better talker but that depends on the bird. When he is in his flare and strut mode (hard to miss the body language) it behooves me to let him be. He likes climing and dangling off of stuff, foot toys, plastic toys.. I heard other zons were perch potatoes so I guess it varies. He also needs lots of stimulation, likes new things, new people, experiences.. congratulations, very happy you've opened your home for these birds.

![]() Good luck and congratulations. Do lots of reading about zons. They typically have very distinctive body language that is easy to read. They usually pin their eyes, fan their tails, and poof up their heads like a lions mane when over excited or aggressive. Not all zons speak. Most do but not always. They do need less fat in their diets than other birds. They are prone to obesity. (Hey, some of us can't help it.) I would read the bird and follow his lead. I find zons can take time to warm up to new situations and new people. They need to know they are respected. I don't mean you have to cater to his every whim but let him know that you respect him and his space. Spend time talking to him. Let him have time in his cage getting to know his new environment. Most of all have fun! I love zons. Next to ekkies they are my favorite birds. They smell yummy and are fun characters!
