Sadie's New Beak

Sadie is a beautiful blue front amazon that was rescued from a neglectful situation after a friend of the owner talked her out of the remaining birds she still owned. We had taken some of her smaller birds several weeks before and were really relieved that the owner decided to give up the rest of her flock. Sadie was of particular concern because she had a malformed beak that was severely overgrown to the point that we were unsure as to how Sadie was able to eat. She looked like a swordfish!

When Sadie went to the vet, we had her do a trim so that Sadie would no longer have to struggle to eat and to help curb the risk of Sadie getting a life threatening infection from beak rott. I have a good friend who does an amazing job with reshaping malformed beaks and started taking Sadie to her to have her beak "fixed." Here are some before and after pictures of the lovely Sadie.

Before:

Progress:

After this weekend's trim, the rott is finally most of the way gone!:

When Sadie first arrived she was a biting, snarling, angry machine! I knew she could be different because she was an angel with her previous owner. I let her decide whether or not she liked me on her own terms. A few weeks ago Sadie decided that she had absolutely had enough time getting to know me through the bars and offered to come out. She is a cooing ball of amazon love. She loves to sing and dance and is perhaps the cuddliest amazon alive (she coos while being cuddled to express her joy.) She still puts up that scary front for others who she has not gotten used to yet and is not too fond of men, but she may very well be the best kept secret in our rescue. I know she will find someone just as special as her.

Wow, what a wonderful improvement. She is so lucky you rescued her! Maybe it's my imagination, but I think she looks happier too.

You do such wonderful work Anna! I can't even express how much your updates touch me.

What a difference you've made in her! Happy to see that horribly rotten twisted beak gone and a happy face in it's place.

WoW! That is an amazing improvement. You sure that is the same bird?
Sadie looks very happy... she even got herself a shoulder. That says it all!

What a lovely girl and wow, what an amazing job on her beak! That is incredible talent to reshape it so beautifully!

I can't even look at the first picture. It makes me so sad to think of her struggling with that beak. You have done wonderful by her (and so many others).

How are the Saints?
