Part 1. Shakti & Dharma have a new sis: Baby Isis
A long story, but to me it is worth writing!
Baby - (We call her Baby Isis). I know that her feathers are a bit ragged, but nothing love and nutrition will not fix. Also, they said she was a Yellow Winged Amazon, but I think she is an Orange Winged Amazon because of the coloring around her eyes.Baby Isis 09-08-09.jpg I have always gone with my “good feelings” as they have never let me down. In fact on many occasions I have relied on them to make a final decision, I also believe in what is to be is. About 3 years ago we drove up to a house to see a baby parrot and when we were about one block away I got this “not so good feeling” and actually told my husband “no, it does not feel right”. Two years later Shakti came into our lives…That was meant to be. It just happened without us even planning. Dharma was completely planned! And we always said we would have only 3. When Baby came up (not planned) I had a great feeling about the situation. Just like it was calling to me (call me weird) so we decided to make the 4 hour trip. Our children and grandchildren live in San Antonio so it was like why not, we have nothing to lose all to gain. Our first stop would be Baby. First let me tell you that before Baby was even an option our car broke down and we had to get a rental which we were not going to do because we decided we really did not need it. An opportunity for a rental came up that we had to take (a great deal) again things had to happen this way. So I get the phone call about Baby. Too good to be true. A guy who has a small rescue and feels that his 1 year old Amazon (who he hand fed) friendly, lovable, never bitten anyone, good health, wants to find the perfect home because he wants to make sure that she is happy and is afraid with the rescue he will not have the time to give her what she needs. He feels compelled to take in these “not wanted” birds and get them ready for a forever home. Again to good to be true. Why would anyone in their right mind want to rehome this wonderful parrot? (Funny thing is that the day before “the baby” even came up, a friend came by and left me a book about amazons because as she said “you do not have one, but I know you like parrots”!) When we reached the house I just had this wonderful feeling! I was greeted by the Parronts and their wonderful family which consisted of a cacique who was playing ball on the floor with 3 girls who were giggling, a finch who greeted us by doing a fly by, a GCC who was a sweetie, a B&G who was missing a wing and a foot from birth (he said she is in her forever home) and Baby’s best friend and roommate a Quaker. This guy sat on a chair with all of these guys (minus the cacique who was too busy playing) loving on him and cuddling him. Even the finch came flying by! Then there was Baby who was being cuddled by the Human Female. We took one look at each other and that was it. Right then and there it was love at first sight. Baby cuddled my neck; baby kissed me (they said to be careful because sometimes she gets carried away) and all I had to say was gentle. Baby gently took my finger in her beak and she softly licked it. We just had this trust which was unbelievable to everyone. Baby immediately started preening and putting her little head in my neck. Baby was meant for us! We took baby with us and she rode on arm the whole way…let me add we had Boris our 5 month old American Bulldog/Mastiff who when he saw her made his owww sound and just laid down. Baby has never been around a dog and let him sniff her and that was that. My kids bought houses next door to each other so it is very convenient when we visit. Baby Iris loved the whole family and everyone was able to hold her. It was as if she always was! But when I walked away she wolf whistles. She does the AT&T message sound so she had my son running around looking for his cell which just cracked us up!! We made the 4 hour trip back, Baby Isis on my chest, Boris next to us on a pillow, the music softly playing and we slept. My husband said that he wished he would have had a camera! Baby Isis is home now. Baby is used to eating fruity pellets, but she loves Mummy’s mash. For a snack last night we all had some popcorn sprinkled with a bit of olive oil, probiotics, nutritional yeast and spirulina. I also made us some fresh carrot juice with a little bit of garlic… Yesterday and today during Shakti and Dharma's conversation, Baby Isis started calling back (she is upstairs). I have an appointment with the vet tomorrow and cannot wait till quarantine is over so that we are greeted every morning with their wonderful calls. |

It is fun getting to know the likes and dislikes. Shakti for instance likes to be "petted" a certain way -- not ruffling of feathers, touch me under the wings if you must. I will give you a kiss if you ask. Unless you have food and then I will do anything including the wing thing. And by the way you missed our shower! And just be grateful that I do not start my morning until you do! Dharma: touch me all over and I love to get into your hair and play until I am tangled! and heck touch me under the wings, I do not care just touch me, touch me, I love you I going to kiss you and you do not have to ask. I love everyone...does the cat want to give me loving! and that in Mummy's book is a big NONONONONONONO and all I have to hear is a movement that sounds like you no matter what time I will call for you....and do not ignore me. I am like the bunny in the battery commercial, I go and I go and I go! Baby Isis: I love it when you mess up my feathers and I will in turn cuddle under your cheek and lick your fingers! I am a very good girl and I do not call until you uncover me. I hope to stay this way and try not to listen to the others! They are all very different!!! |

are you sure she's an orange wing and not a yellow shouldered? I saw a yellow shouldered who had a lot of blue on his head, beautiful bird, and they have different markings from each other for yellow on their face too. I really wanted one but I figured Tiki would hit the roof. They are very gentle, smart and talk well too, very playful and active. The ones I saw had the prettiest long eyelashes. Orange wings are very affectionate and devoted too. I hope she stays on good behavior for you!

In fact I am going to start another thread with pictures of Baby Isis, a yellow shoulder and an orange wing. Because of the beak color I kind of have to say orange wing. |
