My new Amazon!

I just picked him up from the local parrot rescue today for $350. She said he's between 5-10 years old. He apparently hasn't discovered his beak since she said he never bites and so far he'll growl and beak but not even an ounce of power. He steps up willingly but doesn't want to be touched else wise, Although he won't bite when I do try to pet him. The whole ride home he was saying "MOM!" and "Why Hello!" and whining like a baby. Am I giving him too much people qualities or does he really know he was missing his mommy, lol? He hasn't really screamed yet and since the ride home he hasn't said a peep. The lady assured me he isn't a baby. He is healthy; eating, drinking, and preening on his first day home. I've never owned a big bird and I know that their not all like this but he's chilling on top of his cage right now. She said "he's too fat to fly" He is partly clipped but is that even possible to be too fat to fly? He seems friendly and really wasn't loud at the rescue even though the other birds were screaming their heads off. He seems content now and he's truly a gentle giant.

You are right, he is an adult, a double yellow headed amzon. I have one and they are so much fun. His feathers are a bit ratty, a good diet and a molt will help with that! Congrats!

Here comes the questions. I wanted to know how I could get her used to me enough to touch her. She will step up and momentarily let me play with her feet and will take treats from me but won't let me touch her else wise. I just want to know what I can do to make her feel more comfortable around hands. She will give kisses and isn't afraid of my face. She's still quiet, does anyone know about how long she'll stay this way? Thanks so much.

I got my Annie about seven weeks ago. She sounds a lot like Paco. She never screams and yells and doesn't bite. The worst she will do when she is cranky is beak and growl a bit. It took about two to three weeks before she let me scratch her head. She still doesn't let me touch her anywhere else without the growl warning. So far she is not affectionate like my other guys but she likes to be around me and even on my shoulder for awhile. I know that's not recommended with a new bird but it's what she was used to with her previous owner and I think it brings her comfort. I don't know if I've answered any of your question. I am new to Amazons too so I am no expert but they sounded so similar I thought I'd share what's going on in our house.
