Thank you for that! It is far too often that people buy birds for "decoration" because they are beautiful. They end up getting neglected or abused as a result. They are wonderful creatures that deserve lots of love and proper care!

Yeah, being "pretty" is only beginning to scratch the surface. You should be getting the bird because you love birds and their personalities, rather than because they are pretty. Getting a bird because it's pretty is like getting a dog because it has fur. Or... something. You get my drift. (I hope, or perhaps I am making no sense at all.) XD

I have many friends say to me, Omg I want a bird!
First thing I say is that, they're not a pet dog, or cat.
I always explain to them they're a commitment and explain
a few things.
And I have have this from like 3 people now
"eww they poop on you?"

It's really good you posted this, so people are able to have a good think about
getting a bird/new bird so they make an informed design and are aware of needs
they have. (:

Haha! The funniest thing happend! When it says, 'and feathers are everywhere', a feather floated by me!

And I do think this should be at petstores. I once saw a lady with a lttle girl who looked about 7 and they were going to get her a caique! The clark was telling her that all you have to do is feed it and give it toys and it will hapy and talk! And they were going to put it in a cockatiel cage! The mom said they were going to think about it and he left so I told them all about the amount of time needed to care for a parrot and the noise and the cage size. The mom said that she was disgusted by those brats trying to sell an animal to let it be neglacted and they bought a pair of budgies instead (the girl said she always wanted a bird and she loves them).

Okay. Wait a second, I have 6 dogs, and if that's not a commitment, I don't know what is. LOL My dogs are a full-time job for christ's sake. My family's famous saying to me is "You have the patience of a saint." And how about waking up out of a dead sleep and sliding across the room in a pile of poop.

Animals of any sort are a big commitment that people just don't understand sometimes and it's a terrible thing. And then they become throwaways. TERRIBLE. I want to move back to Brooklyn soooo bad, but that would mean I would have to get rid of my dogs, NEVER gonna happen. I'd be unhappy where I live before that. I don't get people sometimes.

I always just say "OK. But its like having a two year old that never grow up and never moves out and likes to play with a Fog Horn and Bolt cutters that you cannot physically take away from them." There eyes get real big and I say - "Oh and they throw food everyday." They usually quietly ask me how I deal with so many and I say its the same way certain people are commited to foster care. And some are not. Its a lifestyle choice and I have no kids but if I did I thing Im prepared,LOL!!

AMEN. Couldn't have said it better myself. My niece said to me today "Why do you want a bird, you have enough dogs?" And someone else said to me today, "Why don't you get rid of your dogs and move back to Brooklyn?" Simple answer, because it's my life and that's the way I chose to live it. Why don't you get a job and take care of yourself and not depend on someone else for living? LOL People who live in glass houses and all that.
