We are getting a Blue Penant sometime this summer if the pair we've chosen breeds our baby! They are gorgeous and the Blue Penant I know talks his little butt off, he kind of looks like an oversized purple dove, he's also a very good bird, not afraid of people.

I wish I could help you with more information about western rosellas, but I've really only had them a short time, and don't know much. They are also called "Stanley rosellas", and among all the kinds of rosellas (about six or eight species, I think) they are the only ones in which it is very easy to sex them, because the male and female are not colored alike. I got them in part because I'd been told they were less aggressive than redrumps, but I found they were really about the same. Part of the success in combining the male rosella with the cockatiels is that the aviary is fairly roomy: about twenty feet long, the width ranging from six to eight feet. One thing I've noticed about the rosella is that he tends to pick up things with his foot, as do many larger parrot-type birds. He's fun to watch as he holds a piece of corn in his "hand" and eats it like we would an ice-cream come. --Barry

It's funny because i was just speaking to a friend that used to own a Rosella (a Crimson), and he was saying that it was the most cuddly and friendly bird he had ever owned....which is hard to imagine knowing all his other birds. Amazingly he didn't even get the bird until it was 6 years old and wasn't hand-trained, he just spent a lot of time with it and trained it himself.

The western Rosellas are native to my area and we have hundreds in the bush. I have handraised an orphan before and released it back into the bush near my parents house where they leave seed out for the wild birds. For weeks they had to keep shooing it out the house because everytime they opened the door "Rosie" would fly right in and whistle at them. Now over a year later he has coloured right up and still comes down to eat out of our hands and walk around the teacups looking for crumbs at morning tea time on the verandah. so I guess what I am saying is they can be really tame if they want to be!

Keeping a Rosella with other birds
I bought my male Rosella as half of a pair, and kept them in the same room as my budgies. When the budgies were out of their cage, sometimes they'd go between the bars of the rosellas' cage to use the bath and this was no problem until the rosellas started wanted to breed. Then Mr R became very aggressive towards the budgies. Mrs R eventually died and Mr R calmed right down. He's lived happily in an aviary with a kakariki and with budgies since then - not sociable, but not dangerously aggressive. Yesterday I got him a new mate and as soon as she was released into the aviary, within minutes he was attacking budgies again. So I would guess, if you haven't already found out, if he's a single fella he'll probably be fine with other birds but if you get him a mate, keep them separate from the others.

I have a rosella, had him 8 days now, (well im assuming it's a he by the colors) and I am finding him real hard to tame and to get near my finger, but he was previously owned and I don't think they had the patience to be slow with him, and just grabbed him instead of allowing him to move in his own time.
when I saw him at his previous owners house I just fell in love with him, but they sure can bite, lol just be warned. |
