Red Rumps
I ordered a pair of Red Rumps today for breeding. Any one have these guys? I have a flight cage to put them in, but other than that I don't know that much about them.

I have sold a couple princess of wales parakeets that were not hand tame. So I think if I just have a couple a year that I handfeed, I think that they would sell okay. I wonder though if they are like lovebirds and handfed parakeets in that they must be handled a certain amount per day in order to stay tame? Most days I have no problems handling all the smaller birds, but some days I just get way to busy to really give them lots of attention.

If they wean off and stay in a cage together not having the daily handling they would revert back to being somewhat "wild". Separate cages may be better but they would still need to be handled.
I had a couple of Ring Necks that weaned off and were in the same cage. One, the owner was able to work with his but the second, the owner still can't handle it. I really think it's the owner in this case but it can go either way. I have a friend who did get a red rump for her neice and raised the bird for her. The bird is pet quality and is a nice pet and does talk but only a few things. This situation was different as the bird did have one on one attention and socialization so it remained pet quality. Does'nt always happen in a store. Not many people are looking for this specific breed so I would rather not stock them. A couple or few a year may be all you need but then if they are there a better potential of having an interested buyer. They are small birds and appealing. Alice |

I've noticed that with my two bourkes, grass keets are like finches, once older they may not be the best pet to look into taming... However, if handraised from a young age they may tend to remain tame, more so if handled frequently. One bourke is tame where-as the other is 'wild', and they are sisters. The tamer bourke, although I don't handle her much, she's a much tamer bird than any bird that handling has stopped completely (such as in budgies and lovebirds.... she remains tame like Casey my tiel, although one was handraised, and the other was also handfed).

Yes, they can be. I was very tempted because they are so cheap and easy to get here but my avian vet said they wouldn't mix well with my other birds. Princess Parrots are very mellow and get on well with Tiels and other birds.

Isn't it something how books can be so off about things. One thing I have always wanted is a planted aviary in a sunroom with Aussie Grass 'keets. I just love them all. I know I've seen it in at least one book that Redrumps do well in a mixed group. I recall Bourkes, Redrumps, Princess', 'tiels, and maybe the Superb (or Elegant) all peaceable enough. The budgie was excluded because they can be so annoying and tendency to squabble.
