Turks

This is my pair, Zina and Turk. I'm waiting at the moment for babies any second from them but methinks the eggs are either infertile or with the weather we've had here DIS. Day 24 since the first was laid so I'm in a bit of a quandry as to what to do at the moment. Anyway..Zina and Turk

Never heard of this kind of bird but they sure are beautiful. Have they been sitting on the eggs?

Yep, Zina's a great mum, but the weather in Adelaide has been all over the place, really hot for days, then thunderstorms and cold for a week. Alot of breeders where I am have had a crap season this year with babies either DIS or birds just not breeding. We're either approaching or in the middle of a drought at the moment. Tara would probably know more on that one. I think the birds sense it.

They're very beautiful. They remind me a little of the Swift I saw this year. I didn't get him as I learned he's be happier in an aviary & with other Swifts.
How old are they? Is this their first clutch?

I once had a turk.... she was an older bird however, maybe 12 years old? Overstressed cause she lost her mate and then lived in her aviary cage with nothing to do but pluck her back feathers out... don't think being moved to a different home with very lively birds helped, but she was a beaut!

Hope your turks have some chicks! Best of luck!

Zina's about 2-3yo, Turk about 18 months. Yeah it's their first clutch. From what I've been told these guys quite often don't have much success until the 2nd or third clutch so I'm not holding my breath with the eggs. Turks been pretty lonely with Zina in the box, but he is so overjoyed when she comes out and will quite often sit in the entrance chattering to her. The local honeyeaters come down and look in on what they're doing too.

You too? They say we are having the worst drought in 1000 years now! I wish it would be over already, I am soooo sick of water restrictions!

Splendids are also known as scarlet chested keets... They do look a lot alike, but not the same species of grass keet...
