I know this is an old post but I thought I would chime in also. I have handfed red rumps. The babies are very tame, especially my male who wants to be my buddy. The female does not want to breed, though. His sister is set up with another male. I am not sure if they are totally bonded, though. They get along fine. I have not attempted to put males together to find out if they fight, though. I am looking a few more, males or females(Ohio).

The red rumps have such pleaseant sounds too.

I think that red rumps are adorable. There is a STRIKING blue mutation out there that is really quite lovely, at least in photos, anyway. I knew of a gal who had some sort of creamino/lutino mutation red rump on another forum as a pet.

I personally believe that with proper hand-raising and socialization as a youngster (and consistent handling by an owner), most any type of parrot can make a good pet. Of course, there will be the parent-raised parrot who can't get enough of humans or the hand-raised parrot who can't stand people. You just never know.

In any case, this is one of my most favorite links:

The Gouldian Guy share stories about a variety of birds and parrots, including the Bourke's, red-rumped and scarlet-chested 'keets.

Enjoy!

I have hand raised quite a few red-rumps, and like any other bird, they all have different personalities. I used to have about 4 pairs, but I had to make room for the rest of my birds, so I am now down to one pair. They are blue opaline grass parrots. They are very chummy with one another, and they can be quite fiesty when it comes to breeding season.

I handraised my 2 red rumps, a male and a female. They are extremely tame and playful. No biting, no fighting, no aggression with other red rumps. But it may just be mine.

I also had an older parent raised rescue red rump years ago and she was very skitsy and nippy.

If you want a "pet" red rump, make sure you find one that has been handfed. Since most people claim they are "aviary" birds, not many people seem to handfeed them. I do not aviary flight mine but keep them in pairs or singles.

I do not know about mixing species, though. I would not chance anyone getting hurt.
