Oliver, Red Rump

I just got a Red Rumped Parakeet (Oliver) a couple weeks ago and simply adore him. He was handfed (I actually got to finish handfeeding him!) and is 3 months old. Everything I've read about them has indicated that they wouldn't make good pets or that they were aggressive. I've found the complete opposite to be true with my Ollie. He is my sweetest and least aggressive bird. Here's a picture of him.

What a sweet looking baby. Maybe Ollie will prove them wrong. He's a beauty. We will want to hear and see more, of course.

Please keep posting updates on his personality and what it's like to have a pet Red Rump. Oh, and more pictures....I think they are one of the most beautiful birds!

Thanks. I just taught him how to wolf whistle and it's sooo cute. I can say that so far he is extremely clingy. He has this sad whistle like cry he does when he wants out and he cries up until the time I put him to bed. My other birds get tired of being out or held, but not my Ollie. He's happy to eat, sleep and poop on my shoulder; and he does. LOL

He likes to ride in the car in his little travel Casbit (like a mini Casbah), loves scratches and gives me kisses. He is the only one that plays with foot toys and will roll on his back when he gets excited. He never ceases to amuse me. I could go on forever; I so love this bird!

Here's some pictures I took of him today:

Beautiful! I have 2 adult males, look exactly like him. Aggressive as hell though, as are the females. It's really comical when they "attack" my hand when I go in to change the food and water dishes. They jump on my hand peck at my fingers and pinch a little but they don't hurt me. They act like miniature hormonal Amazons! LOL

I know exactly what you mean! Ollie has been a little nippy lately but it's more hilarious than anything. Poor thing, he squeaks and thinks he's really telling me off but I can barely feel it. Of course a minute later he's over it and back to being sweet as pie. This bird cracks me up! Most of the time he just sounds like a little squeaky toy.

I love your pictures of Ollie. He is a handsome bird. I especially like the picture of Ollie and your parrotlet Wasabi together. Very cute.

Isn't Ollie precious?

I knew of someone from another on-line forum who had a red-rumped p-keet. I believe it was a lutino mutation who came to her via a rescue. That bird has SO much personality and seems to be a great companion.

I wish you well with Ollie and Wasabi. It's obvious that you care a great deal for them :)

ej,

Wow really? I've never seen a lutino. Ollie has started talking. Now Wasabi's loves to say his name the most, so Ollie's first word was nothing other than Wasabi! LOL I'm still trying to figure out if he says other things because he immitates Wasabi.. so I didn't realize it was Ollie until I had Wasabi in the living room and heard talking coming from the kitchen.

He is quite entertaining...he LOVES water, gives kisses, wolf whistles and now makes Cockatiel and Parrotlet sounds. He also likes to roll on his back, upside down, sideways.. pretty much any way he can. I have four birds and him and Wasabi are the only ones that can play nice with each other. So thanks. I love them. I hope to keep bragging about them both for years to come. :)
