Male or Female? Princess Parrot Advice Needed

Hi! I am new to here but not new to birds. In my house live a cockatiel, a ringneck, a lovebird and two java sparrows.

I have wanted a Princess Parrot for many years now and have decided that this is the year. I have found a lovely breeder.

I have to decide if I want a male or female!! I am so torn because I know the boys are a little brighter and have a blue cap but I have the BEST girl name picked (Sarah = Hebrew for princess).

My questions are...
1. Is there any other main differences that you have experienced between the sexes which I should consider in my choice? I have read everything I can find but am really interested in personal experience.

2. Do you think it is stupid to have a boy called Sarah? (he is still a princess after all!)

3. Any other name suggestions for a boy?

Thankyou in advance for your tips!

Andie

Not many people here have a princess parrot, so there may not be many who can help you with specifics. The ones that do have experence may only have experience with one sex.

I haven't personally read any differences between the two, however with females you may need to worry about egg-laying. With a male, you wouldn't have to, of course!

There are plenty of parrots out there that have been named before they were even sexed! I doubt the parrots themselves care, it's just us when we denote that a name is male or female!

3. Any other name suggestions for a boy?
There's a lot of websites that have various names... 20,000 Names has special names, as well as names depending on the origin or culture. There's also Pet Names, Fun Pet Names, 11,000 Pet Names, and more! I'm not necessarily good with names!

i just purchased a lutino princess of wales about two months ago, that turned out to be male i had really wanted a male anyway,i don't dislike females i just already have a female white crowned pionus so i did not want another female, with the normal color there is not that much of a difference between male and female that i would be turned off to a female,i just stumbled across the chance at a hand fed lutino for a really good price so thats what i got,i don't know how prone to egg laying princess parakeets are, like say compared to cockatiels(tiels are known that they can be chronic egg-layers)now keep in mind princess males sing and their song is very interesting to say the least,as for names you could always pick one that could be used for male or female,i am glad that i researched and fell in love with this species as they really are underrated as to being kept as pets

Thanks for your replies! I think I will get a boy if they make nice singing. I have a girl cockatiel and she is quiet as a mouse. I would love to have some singing from my birds!

Fauuxbird, you should post some photos of your lutino!! They are so striking! The blue is also nice but I love pink so much there is no going past the normal :)

Hello. I've had a pair of Princess parakeets for four years now. We have a large aviary with a female pair of lutino Red Rumps, m/f Rousey Bourkes and m/f Scarlet Chested parakeets with a female silky dove to round it out. We purchased the Princess Parakeets from a breeder who found that they would not breed for her. Four years and many attempts later, sure enough he is willing but she refuses. The female is named Scarlet and the male, Rhett (Gone with the Wind-but I didn't name them). She is far friendlier. She will eat millet out of your hand and greets me whenever I wander out there. She is quiet and never raises her voice except to Rhett when she is annoyed with him. The male was a rooster in another life. He "crows" right after dawn and right before sunset. He will also call me out if it has rained and his food is full of water. They are both gorgeous but the male has deeper coloring and a longer tail. They get along well with everyone even the bickering Red Rump sisters. It would be hard to choose between the male and female. The screaming of the male would have to be considered. Good luck to you.

Thanks, Ceil! Your descriptions of their crazy behaviours was so helpful!
I have pretty much decided now on a male. Their extra colour is beautiful and the noise does not really bother me since I have an IRN and a lovie who thinks she is an IRN!!

Thanks for your help everyone!! I will make pictures when I meet him!

Andie :)
