I just wanted to share my discovery of a great feeder for kakarikis. Until yesterday our kakarikis scratched seed out of every feeder we had given them, just for the fun of it. It was a big waste and made a mess too! Yesterday I decided to try out a plastic feeder we had purchased for the chickens we'll be getting soon, and it is PERFECT. The holes are the perfect size for kakarikis- just a bit larger than their heads so there's no chance of getting stuck- and while they like to try to scratch food out still, nothing comes out.
We got ours from

To give them an "appropriate" outlet for scratching and foraging, we have this ridiculous toy we got from our breeder's shop that consists of a shallow plastic tray with a square of fake plastic grass glued to the bottom. Even our breeder thought it was the stupidest thing she'd ever seen, but the vendor sent her one free so she tried it out with her 'tiels and kakarikis. They love it! You just sprinkle seed or pellets or pretty much anything on the "grass" and they go to work foraging for it. I can't find it listed on her website but it could be made very easily.
The feeder and foraging tray are shared with some Bourke's parakeets and Spendids, who have used them successfully as well.
