yes...catch and release only works so well. pretty soon they need to STOP releasing them. there are many sick cats around where i live and animal control just catches and releases. they need to catch and 'put down'.

By saying "get rid of them for good" do you mean as in euthanizing them? That sounds just a bit extreme to me. If it were an island that had endagered animals then I can understand, but I think that in the most of the US that would be a bit much.

And in the case of my neighborhood traping, fixing and releasing did help because I hardly see any strays anymore, and there is a bigger variety of birds around here now.

Cats are the leading cause for the plummeting population of songbirds. Having said that, in my neighborhood, the predator has become the victim. In the past year, the ENTIRE cat population (people's pets but they let them roam free) has been destroyed by coyotes. The last one disappeared about two weeks ago. That last cat killed more than his share of songbirds, bunnies and other small critters.

I won't hesitate to call animal control or trap any new cats myself that come into the neighborhood. I don't like knowing the cats are being killed but their killing the birds bothers me even more.

I'd bet that those people who lost their cats now regret having let their pets run free outdoors. All the more reason why cats should be strictly indoor animals. Not only do they decimate native animal and bird populations, but they run the risk of getting hit by cars, and eaten by coyotes.

My neighborhood has had a large increase in the coyote pop. as well. That would help to explain why cats aren't seen too often around here anymore. Nature has its own way of fixing things at times.

The owners of the last cat put signs all over the neighborhood. I found one on my car. Oftentimes, while sitting on the computer, I would see this cat come into my backyard and run towards the squirrels and birds at my feeders. I tried to grab him once but he scratched me.

I did grab one cat last spring and brought it to a local veterinarian for boarding until I found a no-kill shelter. Unfortunately all the shelters were full since it was kitten season. But one of the vets fell in love with the cat and she adopted him. In return, she gave me a 20-year old eastern rosella (now named Poppy) who is the nastiest thing in the world. Still I love him.

I met a homeless guy in fort worth that loves cats, he just cooks them up over an open fire in his field and adds a little gravy or B-B-Q sauce.

Mmmmmmm Mmmmmmmm good

thats the catch, the spay/neuter and release programs are about the cats welfare but do nothing to protect the native birds and animals,i have a friend who used to feed a lot of birds in her garden until she felt sorry for a stray cat and started feeding him,now she says she regrets it because all the birds are gone :(

Only one homeless guy?? Tell him the squirrels aren't bad either but the skin has to be crispy. And tell him not to eat the brains.

Let's face it, the problem is not the cat's fault, it the bad owners who don't spay or neuter and let their cat's roam. That or decided they no longer want the cat and throw it out.

My cat came from a ferel moma. My parents have been trying to catch her for years with no success. She have had many kittens, all we have managed to handle and tame, so we caught them and found them homes. They called shelters and such and nobody will come to help catch her and they don't want her put down either. My parents were more then willing to have her spayed and released but nobody will come to catch her and they can not do it (They are 70 as well, so it's even harder).
