It is good advice. The nearest avian vets to me at all 45+ minutes away. The nearest 24 hour emergency place that sees birds is an hour away. I haven't been there, but it's probably not a bad idea to take a drive just in case. The vet where I work has a vet who "sees birds" but in no way would you want to go there if your bird was sick or injured! Although I guess we could at least give oxygen and possibly stabilize so that you could make the trip to the other place.

I'm in Nothern NJ and our emergency vet is...
Animal Emergency & Referal Center
647 Bloomfield Ave
West Caldwell NJ 07006
(973)226-3282

They have vets that are board certified in everything! I've been in there on weekends and a few holidays and there are people there with evrything from little turtles, cats, birds, lizards, snakes all the way to large dogs. I expected Dr Dolittle to walk in and talk to the animals! Great place!

Here's a link to find avian vets in the USA, Australia and Europe:

http://www.aav.org/

I've stickied this thread (and copied it into the Emergency Response forum) and I hope everyone will visit this link, find your nearest avian vet, program your cell phones and print out a Mapquest if you don't know where their office is. Be prepared now!

question...

this is a really great post, and i'm glad it's a sticky.

however stupid this may sound, i was just wondering what exactly should go in a first aid kit? i've been meaning to make one for quite some time now.

as for vet numbers, i have one right next to the bird cages, and am googling some others in my area right now!

Not a stupid question whatsoever. Very timely, actually:
First aid kit...opinions

Gary, this was a great original post. Very important.

It's one of those things you think you'll never need...until you need it.

This board is great for support during an emergency, but will not take the place of a vet.

The computer is not going to perform first aid, etc.

I have magnets on my fridge with my vets' information. Also, the numbers are in my phone.

Wow, excellent reminder to have! Then after you call and go to the Avian vet come and tell everyone how that visit went and let us know how it all turned out for the good of the bird

Thanks Lisa.
I live in North NJ and know avian vets are pretty sparse around here. I currently use Dr Welsh at Franklin Lakes as she has been highly reccomended by a bird owner I trust- don't known if she's certified as an avian vet but seems knowledgable. I used to use the AMC for my dog many years ago. It's an amazing place- never thought to use it for a bird. I once called the Bronx Zoo for advice many yrs ago for my dad's mynah bird
